There was only one race with much in the way of suspense for Tuesday's Preferential Party Primary.

Wanda Knight, Clark County Tax Assessor, had her hands full with challenger Kasey Summerville, but managed to emerge victorious.

Knight garnered 2,537 votes while Summerville received 2,335. At one point the two were separated by a scant three votes.

In other races, Tommy Roebuck nudged Brown Hardman in Clark County for the House of Representatives seat in district 36. Roebuck received 2,333 votes, while Hardman had 2,226 ballots cast in his favor.

However, this district also includes part of Nevada County. Roebuck won by a 2:1 margin with the vote total being 490-235.

Roebuck will face Ron Addington, who is running as an independent, in November.

For the Fourth Congressional District House of Representatives, Mike Ross was an easy winner, getting 3,168 votes.

DeWayne Graham was a surprising second with 747 votes. Judy Smith finished third with 660, while Bruce Harris was little more than an also ran getting 234 votes.

Clark County Judge Floyd "Buddy" Manning earned two more years in office by beating former judge Grady Runyan by a count of 3,014-1,840.

In the justice of the peace races, for district 7 John "JB" Howard edged Bobby Pritchard 373-248.

Orville Buck had a narrow win against incumbent Billy Kirksey for JP in district 8. Buck posted a 286-244 win.

Larry Thomerson earned the right to go head-to-head with Republican challenger Don Morehead in November by beating Jerry Johnson 307-125.

In the race for president, Al Gore easily defeated challenger Lyndon LaRouche 3,735-754. The amazing thing was LaRouche garnering as many votes as he did.

For Arkansas Supreme Court Associate Justice position 5, Judge Jim Hannah pummeled challenger Keith Watkins 2,682-1,604.

For Caddo Township Constable, Benny Arnold was the runaway winner with 2,118 votes. Frank Plasek was next with 705, followed by James H. Davis, 690, and Gerald O'Connell, 668.

A precinct by precinct account of the election will be in the May 31 edition of The Gurdon Times.
