Wortham Gymnasium In Oak Grove Part Of EssayPublished Wednesday, May 24, 2000 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Wortham Gymnasium at Oak Grove near Rosston is the topic of one of 39 essays in a new book prepared by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP), an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, in recognition of the new millennium. Sentinels of History: Reflections on Arkansas Properties Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, edited by Mark K. Christ and Cathryn H. Slater of the AHPP, is a collection of 39 essays written by authors and historians from Arkansas and beyond. Each essay focuses on a specific National Register listed property, but delves also into the historic theme each property represents. The book also features an appendix listing every Arkansas property listed on the National Register through mid-June 1999. Willard B. Gatewood, alumni distinguished professor of history (emeritus) at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, provided an essay based on the Wortham Gymnasium at Oak Grove.
