HUD Money May Be Available For HousingBY RICKY RAGSDALEPublished Wednesday, May 17, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Low income residents, including the elderly and disabled, could be receiving grant funds from the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) if they wish to repair or fix-up their homes. This information was related to the Nevada County Quorum Court during its regular meeting Monday, May 8, by Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office (EDO) director Jon Chadwell. Chadwell attended a HOME Compliance Training Program sponsored by HUD on May 1. The class was required in order to receive funds. About $300,000 is the most the county could receive, according to Chadwell. The information gained will be used by the EDO, local banks, the city of Prescott and Nevada County to complete an application that will become available July 1. "Repairs to the homes must help bring the residences up to compliance with federal, state and local housing codes and provide a safer living environment," Chadwell told JPs. Complete details of the program are still being developed. It is likely both grant and loan money for individuals who qualify, will be available. Funds allowed for individuals will require they borrow money for repairs and then have a portion of the debt forgiven as they pay on the balance. Chadwell expects more information soon.
