Classy Moments from Cabe Middle School

Published Wednesday, May 17, 2000 in the Gurdon Times

We are looking forward to having you to attend the eighth grade graduation Monday, May 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gurdon High School gym. The graduates are getting excited about taking that big step.

Jordan Purifoy, Amy Stiffler, Melanie Shults, Blair Griffin and Taylor Morehead will serve as ushers at the graduation. Their grades represent the top five from the seventh grade.

Saturday was a big day for the junior high cheerleaders. They were the new carhops at the Sonic. They had so much fun, they hardly realized that they were working on a fund-raiser. They did jumps, cheers, chants and gymnastics for donations, as well as worked as carhops.

The cheerleaders extend a big thanks to Mary Smith, manager of the Sonic, for allowing them to use the Sonic as a location for a fund-raiser to help them go to cheerleading camp this summer. Also, and most importantly, they appreciate each of you who supported their efforts.

The band members attended a solo and ensemble contest at Redwater, Texas. They had approximately 60 solos with 10 earning a second division and 50 a first division. Both the beginner and intermediate bands earned a first division in the band portion of the contest.

The first division rating was earned by Victoria Allen, Simone Day, Ashley Floyd, Kenneth Harper, Brittney Talbert, Callie King, Ashley Lindsey, Lacy McNabb, Misty Phenix, Cody Miller, Sherrod Williams, Jessica Puckett, Marco Giles, Cassey Purifoy, Summer Dickey, T.C. Berline, Sean O'Connel, Robert Plyler, Brandon Smith, Franky Smithey, Natalie Tarpley, Curtis Wells, Jason Wells and Tiffany Nolan.

Several intermediate band members jointly earned a first division rating as a band and all of them earned either a superior or excellent rating on their solos. These were Jessie Livingston, Teshima Surbaugh, Kolby Harper, Sydney Foshee, Brant Weems, Ben Gooding, Hayli Coon, Amy Stiffler, Kiffany Hill, Blake Deaton, Melanie Shults, Christa Hopson, Taylor Morehead, Summer Ellis, Dustin Self, Alye Smith and L. John Failla.

Earning either a superior or excellent rating on their solos were Tabith Manley, Triska McCray, Josh Jordan, Kim Hulan and Connie Smith. We congratulate each of these students.

The band presented a concert for the students at Cabe Middle School Thursday. They had the audience, clapping, finger snapping, and some were dancing. That's right, dancing. Just wish you could have seen Mrs. Hitt, Mrs. Smithson, Ms. Hatley, Mrs. Morehead, Mrs. Downey, Mr. Bearden and Mrs. Clingan entertain the students.

Our hearts were saddened to hear about Cassidy Allen's grandfather, Harold Brady, passing away. Cassidy was a former Student Council president when the middle school was located on Fifth Street.

If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook of CMS send $15 to Mrs. Clingan at the school.

Time is getting short for this school year, but always time to continue to make those Classy Moments at CMS.
