Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, June 2, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesThe halls are empty and silence has taken over throughout the building. Just in case you are not aware, school is out! Can you believe it? Time seems to have flown by for us this school year. The eighth grade graduation was such a wonderful success. We appreciate each of you who attended this special evening. The top 10 students delivered speeches with great self- confidence. Jake Plyler gave the invocation. Rebecca Stephens played the flute and the other eight students gave speeches: Becky Callaway, education; Kelly Runyan, goals; Lacey Jester, determination; Bonnie Ferguson, responsibility; Andi Finley, appreciation; Christina Taylor, success; Cody Quillin, What if?; and Claya Calley, Do your best. Mrs. Hitt sang 'One Moment In Time' to the graduates. Mrs. Anita Cabe told the graduates how important it is to "always do your best" in a motivational speech that brought great applause. Mrs. Clingan read a poem she had written and dedicated it to the graduates. Mrs. Alexander handed all the students their diplomas, as Mrs. Bullard called the students names. Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Clingan placed the colored ribbons on the members in the Beta Club and Student Council which indicated membership in those organizations. It was a night to remember for the new Gurdon High School freshmen for 1999-2000. I apologize that Andi Finley's name was omitted from the list of junior high cheerleaders in last week's paper. There is no excuse, except it was certainly not done intentionally. The awards assembly was also a big success. Several students received awards from no D- halls all year, to perfect attendance all year. Special academic awards were given. The Mildred Welch science award went to eighth grader, Jake Plyler. The Woodmen of the World social studies award went to eighth graders, Lacey Jester and Jake Plyler. A baby shower was given for Mrs. Clark. The new 'daughter' is due in August. Mrs. Green brought Heidi to the shower. Heidi is now one month old. I do hope that by now, Mr. (coach) Cathey remembers his wife's name, and also, in case you did not know, Mrs. Smithson was the 'youngest looking' grandparent who attended grandparent day where her granddaughter attends school. I understand that is because she was wearing 'tennie shoes.' I have enjoyed trying to keep you informed of what we are doing and some things we are planning and I do appreciate your support. We will be back before you know it and continue to make those Classy Moments at CMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
