News That Matters To GurdonPublished Wednesday, May 17, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesThe Gurdon Go-Devil all-sport banquet is scheduled for Thursday night, May 18, in the high school cafetorium. Parents, family members of athletics or anyone wanting to attend may purchase a ticket from the high school office for $5. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Call 353-5123 for more information. The Gurdon Street Department will have the site open on Taylor Dairy Road to take vegetation and limbs from citizens who sustained storm damage over the weekend. The site will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. all this week. Building materials will not be accepted. First Church of God, Highway 67S in Gurdon will have a gospel singing this Saturday, May 20, at 7:00 p.m. Featured singing group will be The Testimonies.' Everyone is invited. The graduating class of 1980 will have a meeting Sunday, May 21, at 2:00 p.m. at the Gurdon Municipal Building to discuss plans for a class reunion. This will be the only meeting scheduled due to lack of time. The annual meeting of the Easley Cemetery Association will meet on May 21 at 2:00 p.m. at Hammonds Chapel Baptist Church fellowship hall. The Arkansas Sheriff's Boys and Girls Ranches are seeking donations for a silent auction and a live auction to be held June 3. Individuals and businesses wanting to donate items are asked to contact Lisa Slisher at the ranch office at (870)793-6841, extension 0. Arrangements will be made to pick up any donated items. The board of directors of the Central Arkansas Development Council will meet Monday, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Malvern Senior Adult Center, 836 Acme Street in Malvern. Interested persons are invited to attend. The Arkansas Department of Health announces the availability of funds to support abstinence education efforts for the period October 1 through September 30, 2001. A request for proposal, which includes an application packet, may be obtained by contacting Shaun Addison at 501-661-2019. Applications are due on June 30. The descendants of Jesse and Mary Toland and Will and Nora Toland will meet for their annual reunion on May 21. The reunion will be held at the White Oak Lake pavilion. Potluck will be served for lunch. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Warren-Fretwell family reunion will be held Saturday, June 10, at Gurdon City Park. Potluck lunch will be served. Take your lawn chairs for a day of visiting and picture taking. Fishing is encouraged. The relatives of Albert and Nancy Smith are invited to a family reunion to be held June 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Potluck will be served. The annual meeting of Bethel Cemetery will be held Sunday, May 21, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on the cemetery grounds near Okolona. Covenant Women's Conference, Break Through 2000,' featuring guest speakers Min. Jerime Horton, Min. Jessie Harris and Margret McGhee, pastor, will be held on May 31 through June 2 at Carrie Street Church of God. Nightly meeting begins at 7:00. For more information call Carolyn Crow at 246-6110. The annual Mauldin reunion will be held Saturday, May 27, at Gurdon Lake on Highway 67. It starts at 10:30 a.m. with potluck lunch to follow. Everyone is invited. The Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club meets every second Thursday of each month at the Gurdon Municipal building beginning at 10:00 a.m. Any interested person is welcome to attend. The city of Gurdon reminds residents the storm sirens are tested every Wednesday at 12:00 noon. Sirens are not tested during inclement weather. Gurdon Masonic Lodge 187 meets the first and third Tuesday of each month. All members are urged to attend. Alcoholics Anonymous meets on Wednesdays and Sundays at 8:00 p.m. at the American Legion building, Highway 67 North, one mile out of Gurdon. For more information, phone 353-4698.
