Barry J. Bryan, Gurdon Native Accepts AppointmentPublished Wednesday, May 10, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesThe E.H. Patterson School of Accountancy at the University of Mississippi announces that Dr. Barry J. Bryan has accepted an appointment as an associate professor and Reynolds Foundation Grant recipient. He will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in financial accounting and auditing. Dr. Bryan earned his B.S. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Arkansas and his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. As a graduate teaching assistant at Texas A&M, he received the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Faculty Award, and was recognized for outstanding teaching by Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and the Hispanic Business Students' Association. He spent more than eight years in public practice, where he served a variety of clients, particularly in the oil and gas and real estate industries. He has presented and published articles in academic and practitioner journals specifically related to auditing, peer review, quality control and accounting education. Two of Dr. Bryan's papers, a case study entitled Great Lakes Chemical Corporation: Accounting Issues Related to Mergers and Acquisitions (co-authored with David J. Kvapil of Southern Union Corporation) and The Decision on Derivatives (co-authored with professors Arlette C. Wilson and Gary L. Waters of Auburn University) were each recognized as a "best paper" and "best article," respectively, for the year in their particular publications. Dr. Bryan also serves as a co-author of a leading auditing textbook published by Irwin McGraw-Hill (co-authored with professors Jack C. Robertson of the University of Texas at Austin and Timothy J. Louwers of Louisiana State University). He has conducted continuing education classes for CPA firms and professional societies in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. He also serves as a continuing education consultant and instructor for Arthur Andersen LLP, Deloitte & Touche LLP, and pro2net.com. The Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants recognized Dr. Bryan's excellence in the classroom with the Outstanding Discussion Leader Award for 1998-1999. Prior to joining the Ole Miss faculty, Dr. Bryan spent four years on the faculty at Auburn University's School of Accountancy and two years on the faculty at the Fogelman College of Business and Economics at the University of Memphis. While at Auburn, he received the Auburn Alumni Association Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award, the College of Business Outstanding Teaching Award, three times received the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Teacher Award, the Mortar Board Favorite Educator Award, the Cardinal Key Outstanding Faculty Award, five times received the Panhellenic Council Outstanding Professor Award, and was named as one of eight faculty members to be recognized as a 'Camp War Eagle' faculty honoree to represent the faculty to incoming freshmen during summer orientation. Dr. Bryan has spoken to Auburn alumni clubs throughout Alabama and Georgia, as well as Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Boston, Portland, Dallas, Houston, Knoxville and Nashville. He was a finalist for two teaching awards at the University of Memphis, the Teaching Excellence Fellowship and the Thomas W. Briggs Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award, both of his years on the faculty. Dr. Bryan is a member of the American Accounting Association, Mortar Board, Blue Key, Omicron Delta Kappa, Beta Gamma Sigma and Beta Alpha Psi. He serves as scholarship chairman of the Mid-South Chapter of the Arkansas Alumni Association, and he is active in the Mid-South Chapter of the Texas A&M Association of Former Students. Dr. Bryan attends Lindenwood Christian Church in Memphis and has participated in the 'Young at Art' program at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. He is the son of D.W.
