News That Matters To GurdonPublished Wednesday, May 3, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesThe Beirne Fire Department is hosting a hamburger supper Saturday, May 6, from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the fire station. The meal includes a hamburger with all the trimmings, chips, drink and dessert for $3.50. The Gurdon High School class of 1960 will be holding a planning meeting for its 40th class reunion on Sunday, May 7, at the Gurdon Municipal Building from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. All class members and spouses are encouraged to attend. National Day of Prayer will be held Thursday, May 4, beginning at 11:45 a.m. on the Clark County Courthouse lawn. At 12:00 noon the posting of the colors by the Army National Guard will get the event started. For more details call Leah Hasley at 501-624-8570. The descendants of Jesse and Mary Toland and Will and Nora Toland will meet for their annual reunion on May 21. The reunion will be held at the White Oak Lake pavilion. Potluck will be served for lunch. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Covenant Women's Conference, Break Through 2000,' featuring guest speakers Min. Jerime Horton, Min. The public is invited to a retirement reception for Lee-Ola Booy, Jack Estes and Dr. Ralph Ford at Evans Student Center on the campus of Ouachita Baptist University. The reception will be Wednesday, May 3, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. National Park Medical Center provides blood sugar screening and blood pressure checks at the Gurdon Senior Adult Center on the second Thursday of each Month. David Goodson of the Farm Service Agency (FSA) reminds producers of fall seeded crops, such as oats and wheat, the final date to report planted acres of these crops to the FSA office is May 15. Gragg SuperTree Nursery has achieved STAR Status in OSHA's voluntary protection program. There will be an awards ceremony and celebration May 9 at 11 a.m. at the nursery, just off Highway 299 south of Bluff City. Those going should follow directions from Bluff City. The Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club meets every second Thursday of each month at the Gurdon Municipal building beginning at 10:00 a.m. Any interested person is welcome to attend. Oak Grove Community Church continues to hold Sunday services at 10:00 a.m. through 12:00 noon. Tommy Parker and Homer Easley, evangelists, will preach until the return of their pastor, Rev. Charles Easley. Everyone is welcomed to attend. The city of Gurdon reminds residents the storm sirens are tested every Wednesday at 12:00 noon. Sirens are not tested during inclement weather. Gurdon Masonic Lodge 187 meets the first and third Tuesday of each month. All members are urged to attend. Alcoholics Anonymous meets on Wednesdays and Sundays at 8:00 p.m. at the American Legion building, Highway 67 North, one mile out of Gurdon. For more information, phone 353-4698.
