Merel Dean Clark

Merel Dean Clark of Millington, Tenn., died Saturday, April 8, 2000.

He was born in Conway, Kans., February 15, 1913, and he moved to Horatio at age 5. He is the son of Rhoda and William H. Clark of Horatio. He graduated from Horatio High School in 1931, from Magnolia A&M College (now Southern Arkansas University) in 1935 and from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor of science degree in 1937 and a master of science degree in 1941.

He retired from the U.S. Navy as Commander in 1946 and joined the Admiral's staff as director of Naval Training at NAS, Memphis, Tenn. In 1973 he retired from the civilian staff of the navy to join the family farming interests in Millington.

He was a past president of the Millington Rotary Club and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Clark was member of First United Methodist Church in Millington, serving on the Board of Stewards and the Board of Church Extension and was instrumental in the planning and building of Hampton Memorial United Methodist Church in Millington. He was a charter member of the Millington Planning Commission and was a life member of the Retired Officers' Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the University of Arkansas Alumni Association. His family still owns extensive farming acreage near Horatio. he was a member of the Arkansas Farm Bureau and the Tennessee Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife of 60 ears, Ida Mae McGuire Clark of Millington; three children, Betty Sigler, Becky Clark and William D. Clark; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

His wife was the daughter of Ida E. and Saxon P. McGuire of Prescott. Her sister, Anne Dean Rodgers, of Bellevue, Wash., and brother, Dr. William S. McGuire, of Corvallis, Ore., will be remembered in the Prescott and Nevada County area. All three graduated from Prescott High School and were active members of First Christian Church of Prescott.

Services were held at the Millington First United Methodist Church Monday, April 10. Interment was in Northride-Woodhaven Cemetery in Millington.
