Butterflies ReleasedPublished Wednesday, April 26, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesEarth's Birthday Project and Gurdon Primary School third graders released many M. heliconiaria, which are nocturnal Central American butterflies. The special occasion occurred Friday, April 21, at the school. Participating along with a million or so other students in America, the third grade classes of Linda Thrasher, Beth Miller, Dora Albert and Rusty Manning had planted sunflowers, cared for the butterfly cocoons, and released them in time to celebrate Earth Day, which was Saturday, April 22. Sixteen of the cocoons are still being cared for in the class rooms.
