Bluff City NewsBy JERRY McKELVYPublished Wednesday, April 19, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune I hope your garden plants didn't get nipped in the latest cold snap. We will soon be wishing for some of that cool weather. Millard and Elloene McBride traveled to Texarkana last week. They took Millard's older brother out to lunch to celebrate his birthday. He is 92 years old. I guess I should print a correction to last week's news. Bill and Linda Carman's dog had twelve pups instead of the eleven I reported. They still have eleven. I guess everyone has noticed that all the trees near the power lines have received a haircut from the tree service. I was wondering how I was going to climb my apple tree to prune those limbs. Don't forget that this Saturday (April 22) is the day for the fish fry in downtown Bluff City with the proceeds going to pay medical expenses of David Bishop, Kay Seller's brother. The time is 4 to 7 PM and the cost is $5.00 per plate. Do any of you older readers remember a place called Smash-up? The story I've heard is that a church was being constructed and just as it was framed up, a tree fell on it or a storm blew it down. After that, the place was called Smash-up. It was located a mile or two south of Ebenezer Cemetery. Let me know if you have any more details. Here's an item from the Gooseankle News in April, 1922: Mr. and Mrs. P.R. Plyler were made happy recipients of a fine girl born a few days ago. The baby and mother are doing fine, but Rolfe is still lamenting it not being a plow-boy. It seems some of the pulpwood haulers are not tying down their loads properly. I've noticed three spills in the last two weeks between Bluff City and Chidester. Remember the old saying, "Haste makes waste". Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
