Gilbert New EHS PrincipalBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, April 19, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Students will greet a new high school principal at Emmet next year. Frank Henson, the current Emmet High School principal, has resigned this post and will be replaced by Shade Gilbert of Fordyce. Gilbert, though, isn't employed at Fordyce, but teaches at Camden-Harmony Grove. Dr. Gene Ross, Emmet superintendent, said the Emmet School board, in its regular monthly meeting Monday, April 10, selected Gilbert, because he's also a certified counselor and can assume these duties along with being principal. This, Ross said, will keep the district from having to hire a new counselor as well. Henson has been asked to stay on and teach vocational business. He's been teaching some vocational courses already. Gilbert will be bringing his wife and child, who will be in the fifth grade next year, to Emmet as soon as housing can be found. According to Ross, the district received 12 to 15 applications for the job. In other business the board approved four field trips. Students in grades 3-5 will be visiting the Perot Theater in Texarkana to see the play Beauty and the Beast, while those in the fifth grade earned a trip to Mid-America Museum in Hot Springs. Because of improved test scores, eighth grade students were rewarded with a field trip to the newly reopened Magic Springs theme park in Hot Springs. The fourth trip will be taken once school has ended. The Emmet BETA Club will make the journey to Branson, Mo. The board also approved three elementary summer school sessions. A $3,000 grant was received to help upgrade the school's playground equipment. The district entered into a lease agreement with John Hays Chevrolet for a driver's education car for next year. Emmet's old home economics building will be renovated for the new vocational home ec course next year. The work will be done by individuals working in a variety of areas at the same time to complete the job by the time school starts for the 2000-2001 session. The board also approved salary schedules for next year and hired back all the non-certified personnel. A new Spanish textbook was approved and the board moved Yolanda Reed into the district's after school daycare program for the lunchroom. Reed, Ross said, has been filling in with the daycare on a part-time basis for the last month and will now replace someone who resigned. A final order of business was to rehire Bill Derringer as groundskeeper for the mowing season. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
