Red Springs EHC

Dorothy Nilz and Joyce Rutherford were hostesses for the April 13 meeting of the Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club at the Gurdon Municipal building.

President Tootsie Dempsey presided over the business session.

Nutrition, health and wellness leader Sybil Harris gave the program on herbs. She stressed that herbs and other plants, used with caution, can contribute to maintaining good health. Herbs have been used for medicinal purposes throughout history, but consult one's doctor before using herbs for medicinal purposes, as prescription medicines and herbs may interact in ways that have damaging side effects.

Soybeans and soy food products are healthy additions to the American diet. Soy is a good source of several vitamins, minerals, fiber and contains phytochemicals, which may be responsible for many of the health benefits.

Nineteen members answered roll call with what their favorite herb was and how they use it in cooking, with sage and garlic being the favorite ones.

Dates to remember are April 26 at 9:30 a.m. the county craft workshop will be taught by Mary McBride on the Cathedral Chatelaine. May 5 is senior day in Hot Springs at the Garland County Fairgrounds. May 6 is the county-wide flea market at the Clark County Fairgrounds. May 10 will be the EHC community coffee.

The meeting adjourned with Betty Cook blessing the food.

In the afternoon a craft workshop was held with Cathy Bauer and Betty Cook teaching the Easter washcloth rabbits and spoon rabbit pins.
