Native Of Prescott Named Top Doctor In Texas

Published Wednesday, April 12, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Longview (Texas) News Journal has chosen Dr. Steve Murry of Gilmer as the 2000 Doctor of the Year. That decision was made after a large number of letters were received from Murry's patients asking that he be nominated for this honor, because of the high-quality care he gives to his patients.

Dr. Murry is a native of Prescott. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Murry of Prescott.

Many of Murry's patients also have been heard from in the past and that is why he was named as a runner-up in Doctor of the Year contests during the last three years.

Murry, who established his Gilmer practice in 1983 was chosen from a large field of area physicians in Gilmer, Longview and Kilgore.

One person who nominated Murry wrote that the doctor "is one of the most considerate, compassionate, caring doctors I have ever known. He has helped me through many trials and tribulations. He is never too busy to talk with me. I am so glad that I can count him as one of my extended family."

Another patient's letter said, "Dr. Murry is a wonderful person, a great doctor and just very special. His unselfish dedication to all his patients is so great."

Yet another patient wrote, "Dr. Murry keeps up with new medical discoveries and medicine through continuing education. I have complete confidence in Dr. Murry caring for my health as I enter the geriatric years.

"He has cared for me for 13 years and never once have I been disappointed in him, the care given to me or his staff."

Murry, who is associated with Diagnostic Clinic of Longview, said he is grateful to the many people who nominated him for Doctor of the Year.

"I am honored to be named Doctor of the Year," he said.

"I appreciate the support of my patients who have made the 17 years that I have been in Gilmer a success. They have seen me through many changes.

"I would like to thank the Diagnostic Clinic of Longview for allowing me to be associated with them. Also, I would like to thank my employees who have helped me to attain this honor," he added.

"Most of all, I appreciate my family who have had to share' me on weekends and holidays and have understood when I've missed ball games and special events."

Murry holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He attended medical school at the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas.

He completed his internship and residency at the Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla. He is board-certified in family practice and geriatric medicine.

He also is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a member of the Texas Medical Association and the Gregg County Medical Association.

Murry and his wife, Cindy, are the parents of four sons, Joel, Jason, Jeffrey and Judson. The Murry's belong to the First Baptist Church of Gilmer.
