The recent Tri-County Cow/Calf Clinic held at Hope Livestock Auction turned into a bi-state event.

Approximately 85 producers were present and represented all regions of the state as well as some from Texas. Producers in the state came from as far Brinkley in the northeast, Marshall in the northwest, and Monticello in the southeast, as well as some visitors from Dekalb in northeast Texas.

The most popular part of the program seemed to be the live cattle portion of the program, with lots of positive feedback from the attendees.

I would like to thank the Nevada County sponsors of this Clinic: Nevada County Ranch Supply, John Ratcliff Fertilizer and Tyree Farms. The support of these three organizations contributed greatly to the success of this program. We would also like to thank Jerry Nance, Greg Lindley and Kyle Webb of Farm Credit Services for graciously providing the meal. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the area producers for their support of this program and hope to see you at Extension programs in the future.

NEVADA COUNTY

MASTER GARDENERS

Nevada County recently gained a new club. This past February four Nevada County residents spent five days training to sharpen their horticultural and gardening skills by attending the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service Master Gardener training in Arkadelphia.

The training consisted of one day per week for five weeks learning about various horticulture related topics, including basic botany, soils and fertilizers, fire ants, diseases and insects, fruits, vegetables and proper pruning application.

The Nevada County Master Gardeners are Don Ingersoll, Ron and B.J. Glass and Claudette Harris all of Prescott.

The Master Gardeners will volunteer at least 40 hours of their time to the Master Gardener program within the next year in Nevada County. One of their first projects is to work with the 4-H Clubs and Hillcrest Care and Rehabilitation residents to plant flowers in the center's existing raised beds. This is an on-going project, which began in 1999 that has added enjoyment to the lives of the residents at the center throughout the spring and summer months.
