Filing Period Ends; Sheriff, Judge Draw OpponentsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, April 12, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Few candidates in the area will be opposed for the May 23 Preferential Party Primary. The filing deadline was Tuesday, April 4, at noon, statewide. On the local level Nevada County Sheriff Steve Otwell is being challenged by Mike Mullins. Nevada County Judge James Roy Brown has opposition from Owen Davis. Otherwise, the only opposed races for county offices are justice of the peace races. However, one state office is being challenged. Sandra Rodgers, Representative from District 28, has had the gauntlet thrown down by Hope businessman Don Gilbert. Karen Cobb will be the Nevada County Treasurer once again, while Pam Box will retain her seat as Nevada County Tax Assessor. Carolyn Steed will remain the Nevada County Circuit Clerk, while Julie Stockton will keep her job as Nevada County Clerk. The justices of the peace for the Nevada County Quorum Court will be as follows: Gary Lewis in District 1; Willie Wilson in District 2; Danny Miller in District 3; Curtis L. Johnson in District 4; Leo Holleman in District 6; Adron Hicks in District 7; and Arval Mason in District 8. Those justices with opposition are John Henderson, challenged by Robert Cummings in District 5, and George Clary being confronted by Ottis Otwell. There are some contested races inside the city limits of Prescott. For the Prescott City Council, ward 1, position 1, Steve Crow is unopposed. Ward 1, position 2, though has Richard Bright challenged by Steve Inlow. Howard Austin will remain the alderman from ward 2, position 1. Danny Beavert is being challenged for ward 2, position 2 by Elaine Williams. Karen Ward will retain her seat in ward 3, position 1, while Ann Stockton will stay in ward 3, position 2. James Roy Cornelius remains at ward 4, position 1, with Susie Meeks staying at ward 4, position 2. Steve Jackson and Al Plyler are vying for the job as constable of the Missouri Township, while James Osborn and Tommy Hand are running for constable of the Emmet Township. Danny Martin is unopposed for the post of constable for Caney, Larry Miller gets a free ride as constable for Taylor and Thomas C. Johnson will be constable of Boughton. Tommy Glass will remain Nevada County Coroner. A meeting has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, April 13, for drawing ballot positions. Those unable to attend can have a representative draw for them, or someone else will do the drawing. The drawing, according to Davis Benton, chairman of the Nevada County Central Democratic Committee, is only for candidates with opposition.
