Victims Celebrate Rights

Published Wednesday, April 5, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune

National Crime Victims' Rights Week in America commemorates its 20th anniversary the week of April 9-15. Crime victims and those who serve them will join together in communities across America to reflect on the many comprehensive services available to victims of crime.

Over the last 20 years, there has been tremendous growth in victims' rights and services. This year's theme, Victim's Rights: Dare to Dream,' acknowledges the collective efforts of the criminal justice system, probate industry and the general public.

Nevada County's commitment to crime victims is evidenced by the participation in the Arkansas VINE Program.

The statewide Arkansas VINE Program provides victim information about the status of an offender and automated telephone notification to registered victims when a change in custody status occurs 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the year.

According the Sheriff Steve Otwell, "The Arkansas VINE Program empowers crime victims to stay informed about the custody status of offenders and use that information to make important decisions about their own future. Information is key to a crime victim's efforts to put his or her life back on track. Accessible information through the Arkansas VINE Program gives crime victims a sense of security and helps them stay informed and involved."

Initiated in Nevada County in 1999, The Arkansas VINE Program is a free public service available to citizens.

"During 2000 National Crime Victim's Rights Week and throughout the year, Nevada County Sheriff's Department encourages the community to continue seeking comprehensive ways to assist victims of crime," Otwell said.
