Cemetery Records Are Updated By McKelvys

Published Wednesday, April 5, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune

Jerry and Jeanie McKelvy have made their survey of Nevada County cemeteries available to the public on the Prescott Community Freenet Association Internet web server, PCFA.ORG.

The McKelvy survey has 21,969 records and contains many annotations. Periodically, the McKelvy's update the information based on published obituaries and by making visits to selected cemeteries.

PCFA continues to make available the 12,768 records contained in the Nevada County Extension Homemakers Club (EHC) survey. The EHC survey was conducted in the 1950s to compile information before death certificates became mandatory and is made available to PCFA by the Depot Museum.

Both surveys are on-line at http://www.pcfa.org and can be found by clicking the Cemeteries' link at the top of the page. Researchers can specify a word, such as a family surname, and the PCFA server will respond with a list of matches. Alternatively, the web page visitor may specify the cemetery for which they want a complete listing.

The database information is available for an individual's own research, but may not be reproduced for commercial purposes.

PCFA was founded in 1995 by Charles Ray Cross, Eddie Daniel and Danny Stewart. One of its initial purposes was to bring dial-in Internet service to Prescott. That mission was completed when IOCC.COM came to Prescott in February 1998. IOCC.COM provides PCFA.ORG with the high-speed Internet connection.

Now PCFA is directing its focus toward its second purposeproviding a large amount of information about Prescott and Nevada County to the world. In addition to information such as the cemetery database, PCFA is working with the Depot Museum to place its information on-line. PCFA also offers information pages for every business, church, government entity and community organization. Volunteers are needed to help with the projects.
