Hamilton Honored By Group

The Charmett Civic and Social Club has named Johnny Hamilton Jr. as its recipient of the 2000 Community Involvement Award (CIA).

Hamilton, a native of Prescott, is active in both civic and religious organizations in the community. He presently serves on the boards of the Ila Upchurch Corporation, the Prescott Housing Authority and the Boys to Men - Girls to Women Coalition. He has served on the Nevada County Democratic Committee.

Along with his wife, Mae, he co-chaired the third and fourth McRae School reunions. He has served as street chairman for the March of Dimes; served as a volunteer with the pink ladies for the now defunct Nevada County Hospital and as a volunteer in the classroom at Prescott Elementary School. He is a mentor for the Boys to Men Coalition.

He is a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church in the Boughton Community, where he serves as deacon, adult Sunday school teacher, assistant Sunday school superintendent and shares van driving responsibilities.

Along with deacon George Odom he was the official daily inspector for the building of the new church. He is called on to perform many duties around the church.

He graduated from AM&N College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff). He did further study at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas; Tennessee A&I University at Nashville, Tenn.; Hampton Institute at Hampton, Va.; and Colorado State University at Fort Collins, Colo.

He was employed for 25 years for the Prescott School District as a science teacher, basketball coach and track coach. He taught at both McRae and Prescott High Schools.

While at McRae his junior basketball boys won the state tournament.

He is an avid bowler and a member in good standing of the Shell gang.'

He is married to the former Mae Helen Grayson. The couple have three children: Michele Hamilton Rhodes, Keith Lamar Hamilton and Nicole Tiara Hamilton. He has one granddaughter, Grayson Rhodes.

Hamilton joins an illustrious list of 21 previous recipients of this award.
