Andrew Wilson of Gurdon has been awarded a Chancellor's Scholarship to study at the University of Arkansas.

Chancellor's Scholarships are among the university's most prestigious awards, providing full tuition, fees and room and board to top students from Arkansas and the nation.

Chancellor's Scholars represent the top five percent of students throughout the United States, often being recruited by the country's top-tier institutions. These students have excelled in the classroom and have distinguished themselves as leaders in their schools and communities. They have earned among the highest scores on college entrance exams, and many of them have achieved National Merit or National Achievement finalist or semi-finalist status.

Wilson can maintain his scholarship for four years by making normal progress toward a degree and maintaining a 3.0 grade point average at the university.

After auditioning for the UA Razorback band, Wilson has been awarded a four-year band scholarship in addition to the previous scholarship. The band scholarship will be worth $3,200 over four years.

The Office of University Relations and Admissions at Henderson State University has announced that Christina Currey has been awarded the Award of Achievement Scholarship.

According to director Vikita Bell Hardwick, the Award of Achievement Scholarship is equivalent to $500 per semester for up to four years, which equals approximately $4,000.

Currey is the daughter of Chris Currey. She is currently a student at Gurdon High School.

Freddie Horne of Gurdon has been elected vice president of the Alpha Delta Chapter of the Alpha Epsilon Lambda (AEL) National Honor Society for graduate students at Henderson State University.

Alpha Epsilon Lambda recognizes, promotes and fosters outstanding leadership and high academic achievement among graduate and professional students. In addition, AEL promotes and encourages high ethical standards while providing service to graduate students and student organizations. Membership consideration is based on grade point, academic standings, ethics, the demonstration of leadership, and service.

Horne received his BSBA from HSU in 1974, his teacher certification in 1993, and he was an honors graduate with a master of education degree in public school administration in 1999.

Horne is in his seventh year as business and computer technology instructor for Gurdon High School. He is a member of the HSU Alumni Association. He has served on the HSU technology curriculum alignment committee for NCATE and has chaired several curriculum committees for the Arkansas Department of Workforce Education.
