Classy Moments from Cabe Middle School

Published Wednesday, April 5, 2000 in the Gurdon Times

We have just experienced a very busy week. We started out as usual, but soon found ourselves as busy as bees.

Tuesday we had the privilege of having Dave Sargent, a writer of children's books, with us. He and his wife, Pat, entertained us for about an hour.

Pat Sargent also writes children's books. Students had the opportunity to make purchases of the books.

Wednesday the Cabe Middle School Student Council sponsored the monthly assembly. Special guests were the Nickelodeons, 24 first graders from Perritt Elementary School, in Arkadelphia.

Mrs. White, music director, had the students ready to perform and perform they did. Those students held the student body of CMS spell bound.

Each song had various hand gestures and several solo parts, which each one knew the exact time to walk up to the microphone and sing. The discipline the students exhibited was simply outstanding.

Citizen students were recognized and given certificates. The students receiving a certificate were Mariela Medina, fifth grade; Cody Miller, sixth grade; C.J. Stroder, seventh grade; and Lynsey McKenzie, eighth grade.

The election of new officers and representatives for next year was explained and next week a time will be set for students who are interested in running for an office to meet with Mrs. Clingan to go over the requirements. Election will be later this month and the installation of officers will take place in May.

Mrs. Bullard, junior high cheerleader sponsor, introduced the 28 girls that are trying out for cheerleader. She reminded the audience that only 12 will be selected by the judges. This year will be a most difficult one to narrow the number from 28 to 12, as Bullard said they are all very good. She is glad to be a sponsor instead of a judge.

We are certainly glad to have Mrs. Green back with us, as one of her daughters was in the hospital for a few days. All seems well now.

Seeing is believing, as it has been said, and to see Mr. Smithson from time to time makes us feel he is doing real well. Just don't over do it, Mr. Smithson. We are glad you are able to make those visits to us.

Friday is the day for cheerleader tryouts, and, my, but how tense some of the students are. Balloons and flowers were arriving at the school in such bundles the girls needed help in carrying them.

Next week we will be able to tell you the names of the new cheerleaders. We just wish them all good luck and we are proud of them no matter which way it goes.

Hope you have a good week. Continue to keep us in your thoughts and caring for us while we continue to make those Classy Moments at CMS.
