Clide Edward Roe

Clide Edward Roe, 86, of Gurdon died at Baptist Medical Hospital in Arkadelphia Wednesday, March 29, 2000, after a brief illness.

Mr. Roe was born April 22, 1913, in the Bethlehem community in Clark County.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gladys Nelson Roe; sons and daughters-in-law: Dale and Bonnie Roe of Arlington, Texas, Larry and Esther Roe of Wareham, Mass., Danny and Rita Roe of Okolona, Paul and Marianna Roe of Malvern, Glenn Roe of Chidester and Eddie and Susan Roe of Hot Springs; daughters and sons-in-law: Kathryn and Eddie Clark of Arkadelphia and Sherry and David Karr of Gurdon; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

During his early years, Mr. Roe worked at different jobs in various sawmills in the area. He moved his family to Gurdon in 1946 and began working as a self-employed lumber contractor, hauling lumber to mills in a tri-state area. He continued working in this capacity until his retirement at the age of 73. After retirement he maintained as interest in sawmills, purchasing and running a one-man sawmill for his own use and enjoyment and visiting sawmills throughout the state until he was no longer able to travel.

Mr. Roe was a member of First Baptist Church in Gurdon, where he served faithfully as a deacon and teacher until a few years ago, when he became homebound and dedicated to the care of his wife.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 1, at First Baptist Church in Gurdon with Rev. James Horace Dunn and Rev. Paul Sheets officiating. Interment was in Bethlehem Cemetery near Gurdon. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Horne Funeral Home of Gurdon. In lieu of flowers memorials maybe made to the First Baptist Church of Gurdon.
