Club NewsRed Springs EHCPublished Wednesday, March 29, 2000 in the Gurdon Times Tootsie Dempsey and Cathy and Laverne Bauer hosted the Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club meeting March 9 at the Gurdon Municipal building. President Dempsey led the Pledge of Allegiance and Laverne Bauer gave the inspirational reading Foot Prints.' Twenty-one members and one visitor answered the roll call by telling who their mentor was when they were young. The majority mentioned their mother and grandmother. Home and community environment leader Elizabeth Wilson gave the presentation, Mentoring,' to the club. Mentioned in ancient Greece, Odepseus entrusted his son Telemachus to a long time trusted friend named Mentor. The term mentor now describes a trusted counselor or guide, a tutor or coach. Attributes of a mentor include genuine concern, listens with interest, encouragement to try your best and not give up. All of these things a parent does, but some are not so easy. Mentors show how to do things without making fun, getting angry or losing patience, and give advice if necessary. People with experience can contribute to the successful development of those with less experience. Plans were finalized to have a booth at the Clark County EHC flea market on May 6 at the fairgrounds. Cathy and Laverne Bauer and Tootsie Dempsey will be in charge of the county craft workshop March 29 on construction of the kitchen angel.' The meeting was adjourned with reading of the poem Forget and Remember. Lunch was served with Betty Cook blessing the food. In the afternoon the kitchen angel' craft workshop was held.
