Curley Wolves Win Two More Baseball Games Last WeekOuachita, Lockesburg Fall To Prescott Squad In Non-District ActionPublished Wednesday, March 15, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Curley Wolf baseball team has won as many games already as the team did last season. The Wolves clipped Ouachita 4-1 Monday, March 6, and followed this by pounding Lockesburg 10-5 on March 9. In the Ouachita game the Warriors scored in the top of the first on an error and single. Prescott rallied for two in the bottom of the fourth as Josh Bullock singled and Gabe Morman reached on an error. Chris Glass hit into a fielder's choice sending Bullock home. Morman scored on a wild pitch to put Prescott up 2-1. In the fifth, the Wolves added two more to their tally to end scoring in the game. Keon Sockwell reached on an error, with Bullock ripping a single. Morman followed with an RBI single to bring Sockwell in, while Bullock scored on a John Fulmer single. Bullock picked up the win, going the distance and allowing one run on five hits while fanning four and walking none. "It was a tremendous pitching duel," said Coach Steve Crow. "Bullock's control was outstanding. "We only had seven hits, but they came at opportune times." Crow said Ouachita is a good club and the Warriors have won a couple of state titles, along with several district tournaments. "We knew we had to play well to win, and we did," he said. Bullock scored twice and had two hits. Ronnie Nolen doubled, with Matt Yates walking twice. Making the trip to Lockesburg, the Wolves also made the Blue Darters pay with the 10-5 win. Prescott opened the game with five in the top of the first. Nolen walked, scoring on Sockwell's double. Bullock reached on an error, which allowed Sockwell to go home. Morman walked and Fulmer belted a single to score Bullock. Fulmer then stole second with Morman scoring on the throw. Yates singles, stole second and Fulmer then scored on the throw to the bag., The Darters were given a gift in the bottom of the frame as they scored four runs. After lead-off walk and two outs, the Wolves committed three errors and gave up a single to allow the Darters to make a game of it. Prescott went up 7-4 in the top of the second. Sockwell walked and Bullock reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Yates walked to fill the bags, with Glass following this up with a single, bringing in Sockwell and Bullock. The Darters fired their final salvo in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a single, error and groundout. The Wolves finished Lockesburg off in the top of the fifth with five more runs. Ryan Burdue walked, went to second on a Sockwell single and scored on an error that allowed Bullock to reach first. Fulmer smacked another RBI single to score Sockwell, with Fulmer than stealing second. The throw to the bag allowed Bullock to score. Burdue was the winning pitcher, going the distance. He gave up five runs on six hits and five walks while striking out six. Sockwell scored three times and had two hits. Bullock circled the bases three times and drove two in. Fulmer drove two in with three hits, while Yates recorded two singles and Glass had two RBIs. "Prescott wanted to win this game real bad," Crow said. "We lost to Lockesburg in our classic, 7-6, and felt like we should have won that game. But we didn't play very well. "We wanted to play better this time around and did." This was Prescott's first road game of the year with the players handling the trip well, Crow said. Burdue, the sophomore hurler, had command of all his pitches, the coach said. However, the team "went to sleep" after scoring five runs in the first. Lockesburg, he said, woke the Wolves up by scoring four in their half the inning. But, for the final six innings, the Darters were held to one run. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
