Bluff City

Last week's news:

Another month has come and gone. At the end of each month, I usually try to recap the events that happened in this area 20 years ago. I looked back in my records and could find nothing exciting or unusual that happened in Bluff City in 1979. Maybe next month.

Oil has been discovered in Bluff City. Well, not really. It's just the Highway Department putting oil on Highway 299. I hope you don't have a white car.

School is out and summer is about here. Hope everyone had an enjoyable Memorial Day holiday.

Since I haven't heard of any late breaking news and Madam Rumor has not called, I will use this space to print a list called Table Etiquette that was printed in the paper in 1887.

  1. Never smack your lips when eating.
  2. Never pick your teeth at the table.
  3. Never propose a conundrum or whisper at the table.
  4. Never put your fingers in your mouth.
  5. Never drum with your fingers on the table.
  6. Never put your knife in your mouth.
  7. Never put your elbows on the table.
  8. Never scrape your plate or tilt it to get the last drop of anything it contains, or wipe it out with a piece of bread.
  9. Never play with your knife and fork or salt collar, or balance a spoon on your glass.
  10. Never watch the dishes as they are uncovered, nor make any exclamation when their contents are revealed.
Our thought this week: "Some drink at the fountain of knowledge; others just gargle."

This week's news

Several of our students were recognized at the end of the school year. I've heard that Brady Carman was chosen Citizen of the Year of his kindergarten class. Justin Phillips received an academic award. There are probably others who I don't know about. We are proud of all our young people.

Elloene McBride has her arm in a sling due to a recent fall in which she broke three fingers. It happened while she and Millard were in Austin, Texas, to attend the graduation exercises for one of their grandsons. We wish her speedy recovery.

Vernell Loe had some excitement a few days ago when she caught a five-pound catfish on a rod and reel while fishing at the river. I understand it put up quite a fight and made her want to go fishing again.

Mrs. Freeda Knight, an aunt of Debbie Phillips, passed away in Jonesboro on May 31. She was the widow of Dervis Knight.

Some of the gardens are producing now. The main vegetables to be found now are new potatoes, string beans and squash. Pinto beans, sweet corn, and tomatoes will soon follow. I don't know about the more exotic vegetables like asparagus, broccoli and cauliflower. I leave those to the expert gardeners. I read the other day that a cauliflower was a cabbage with a college education.

I understand that Linda Carman has been enjoying seeing more of the Natural State by visiting Caney Creek bottoms by four-wheeler. Who says you can't vacation close to home?

Our thought this week: "It is possible for your mind to be so open that your brain falls out."
