Wolverettes Falter In First Round Of State TournamentBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, March 8, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Wolverettes had their basketball season ended in the first round of the state playoffs. The Wolverettes tangled with the Pocahontas Lady Redskins and came up on the short end of a 71-59 score. For eight minutes the game was dead even as the two teams were deadlocked 11-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Skins began pulling away in the second quarter, taking a 35-28 lead to the locker room at the break. The third was evenly played with Prescott unable to make a dent in the Lady Skin lead. The period ended with the score 46-38. In the final frame, the Wolverettes were unable to capitalize on layups, while Pocahontas was all but perfect at the free throw line. For the night, the Wolverettes were also deadly from the line, netting 11 of 12 free throws. Pocahontas hit 17 of 23 attempts at the charity stripe. Andrea Cossey ended her high school career with a game high 27 points, including five three pointers. Traci Graham's prep career was concluded with a 19 point effort, including a three. Jeania Haynie scored 10 in her final game as a Wolverette. Kazee led Pocahontas with 19. Buzby scored 14, while the duo of Carter and Belz had 13 each.
