College NewsPublished Wednesday, March 8, 2000 in the Nevada County PicayuneSeveral seniors from Nevada High School have been offered Technical Scholarships to the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope. The students are Lashanna Dillard, Kristy Melson, Justin Curtis, Jeffery Taylor, Jeff Pinto, Terry Sanders and Alexis Madison. Madison is the daughter of Gary Madison of Waldo. She will be pursuing an associate of applied science in business technology. Sanders is the son of Kimberly Boyd of Rosston and Randy Sanders of Hope. He will pursue a certificate in Cisco certification. Pinto is the son of Brent and Nancy Holcomb of Rosston. He will be pursuing an associate of arts degree in general education. Taylor is the son of Gary and Cindy Taylor of Rosston. He will be pursuing a certificate in Cisco certification. Curtis is the son of Jack and Beverly Curtis of Bodcaw. He will be pursuing an associate of arts degree in general education. Melson is the daughter of Ronnie and Debbie Shewbirt of Rosston. She will be entering the emergency medical technician (EMT) program. Dillard is the daughter of Dianne Dillard of Emmet. She will be pursuing an associate of applied science degree in business technology. The scholarship is based on an ACT score and grade point average plus a recommendation from a school official. SHELLY WINDHAM Shelly J. Windham, a senior at Prescott High School, was named the recipient of an Achievement Award to Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia. The four-year scholarship is based on ACT scores and pays partial tuition. Windham plans to major in social work. She is the daughter of Richard Windham and Tamula Pelton and Billy and Shari Inscore of Prescott. Kellen P. Sweat, a senior at Blevins High School, was awarded a Foundation Scholarship to Southern Arkansas University of Magnolia. The four-year scholarship includes resident tuition as a full-time student and room in the university residence halls. Sweat is the son of Ronald and Kimberly Sweat of McCaskill. Sixty-six juniors and seniors at Southern Arkansas University of Magnolia have been accepted as new members to Alpha Chi, the national college honor scholarship society. Tiffany Rash, a junior finance major from Prescott, was one of those inducted. The initiates, elected by faculty review, represent the top 10 percent of the junior and senior classes in each of the university's four schools. These students reflect not only high scholarship, but also good reputation and character. Those presiding over the ceremony were Dr. Gayle White, professor of management; Dr. Jerry Pyle, dean of the School of Liberal and Performing Arts; Dr. Dan Ball, vice president for Academic Affairs; Dr. David Rankin, dean of School of Business; Dr. Suzanne Jessup, professor of education and Alpha Chi chapter sponsor at SAU; and Pamela Price, SAU Chapter president. Melissa Beavert and Beth Culpepper of Prescott have made the dean's honor list at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. To be eligible for the dean's honor lists, a student is required to earn at least a 3.5 academic grade point average with no grade lower than a C on a minimum of nine semester hours pursued (100-level or higher).
