Firstar Takes OverBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, March 8, 2000 in the Gurdon Times It's official, Mercantile Bank is now Firstar in Gurdon. The Firstar sign has replaced Mercantile's across the state. This is the result of Firstar's acquisition of Mercantile Bancorporation, Inc. in Sept. 1999. This acquisition made Firstar the 15th largest bank in the nation and will provide its Mercantile customers increased customer services and conveniences. Mercantile customers can continue using their supply of checks, but when they reorder, the new checks will bear the Firstar logo. "Although the Firstar name may be unfamiliar to people, they will quickly become acquainted with Firstar's exemplary levels of customer commitment," said John Davis, president of the Hot Springs Firstar. When Firstar has all of its signs in place, the company will then start introducing Mercantile customers to its products and services. Customers, according to a release from Firstar, will notices the benefit of banking with a stronger organization offering more banking options and resources. Some of the first services will include Firstar's Super ATMs, Internet banking, 24-hour banking, workplace banking and small business banking. Some of the products offered will include Student Finance 101, interest checking enhancements, senior value and balance checking, multiple savings account options, home mortgages and others.
