Literacy Day, Month Will Be CelebratedPublished Wednesday, September 8, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneSeptember has been designated National Literacy Month. Today (Sept. 8) is International Literacy Day. Many businesses and individuals are planning special events to promote awareness. The statistics indicate a high percentage of the population is functionally illiterate. Many who read and write are deficient in basic skills needed to hold jobs requiring math, computer skills and decision making. The SWADC Learning Center plans to promote literacy by launching a book drive to collect books that no longer bing used by its present owner, but someone else may need badly. The center will be happy to receive your book donations at 304 East Vine Street. The office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Or someone will be happy to pick up your books if you call 1-870-887-5536. The literacy program is always struggling for funds to provide the needed free materials to use with those who come in for tutoring. Readers are asked to watch for announcements concerning a Learning Center book coming up soon. There will be some treasured items for auction. There will be autographed books, some autographed photos of celebrities, old books, and some twice loved children's books. You can be a part of the celebration by giving generously of your books, your time or a donation of money to the Learning Center to promote literacy along with the many celebrities who endorse the National Literacy Program.
