Produce Growers' Meeting SetBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, March 1, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune A meeting of area produce growers will be held Tuesday, March 7,to discuss the Farmer's Market in Prescott. Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, said this is a planning meeting and will be held at the Nevada County Extension Office. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Those attending will help plan the third annual Farmer's Market and determine when it will begin, what days it will be open and what the hours of operation will be. The Farmer's Market, Godwin said, was started three years ago as a joint effort between the Extension Office and Chamber. The idea was to promote the area's farmers and produce growers while providing a service to local residents. "It's been successful for the past two years," Godwin said, "and I hope it keeps growing. We need as many producers as we can get to participate." For the past two seasons, the market has been held at the Prescott City Park. This meeting will also help decide if the market will remain at the park or be moved. Growers who are unable to attend the meeting, or need more information can call Godwin at 887-2101, or Rex Dollar at 887-2818. Godwin said entertainment for the annual Chamber Banquet is being lined up. The headliner of the evening will be Eric Shipp of Texarkana, who will sing for the audience. Godwin said anyone planning to make a nomination for Citizen of the Year needs to do it now as time is running out. The deadline for making a nomination is March 8. Nominations should be made in letter form and include the following criteria: the nominee's service to family, city, county, state, nation, church, fraternal, recreational, industry and education. Tickets for the banquet are still available, but are going fast. Godwin said tickets can be reserved by calling the Chamber. This, too, should be done quickly as the seating at McRae Middle School's cafeteria is limited and a sellout crowd is expected. This year's theme is "Hitch Your Wagon To Our Rising Star," with dress being casual or western. For the first time, a buffet line will be used in serving patrons of the banquet. Godwin said the Chamber is still collecting items for the auction, normally held before the entertainment begins. Additionally, she said this is the last week for those planning to enter a design for the 13th Annual Chicken and Egg Festival T-shirt contest. Designs can't be computer generated and must include the year, Prescott, Arkansas, and The 13th Annual Chicken and Egg Festival. The designs can include up to three colors and must be 8 by 10 or larger in format size. Judges can reject any or all entries and will be from out of town. The winner will received a cash prize of $50. Once the design has been selected, the Chamber will then decide what color the shirts will be for this year's festival. For more information call the Chamber at 887-2101. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
