Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, February 23, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Last week's news: We go from snow one week to 70 degree weather the next. I guess that is typical Arkansas weather. It won't be long until we will be dodging tornadoes. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 12, for Jewell McKelvy Jones of Camden with burial at Bluff City Cemetery. She was a daughter of Oscar and Fannie McKelvy, who was also buried at Bluff City, and a granddaughter of Issac Pinkney and Delila Hesterly McKelvy. Nell Wanda McKelvy's brother, Jackie Walker, has had to return to the hospital in Texas for treatment. Also Kay Seller's brother is receiving treatments in Texas. Remember these families in your prayers. Bill Sellers was almost unable to lead singing last Sunday due to what he called "a vapor lock." He has been suffering with a sinus condition the last week or two. Lloyd and Pearl Hinson are back in Zambia, Africa, now doing their missionary work. We receive regular reports from them telling of their work in that country. Pearl is Elloene McBride's sister. It's time to plant those cabbages and onions now. It seems to me like fewer are growing gardens these days. We at least need to keep in practice and not forget how it is done. Somebody has got to grow the food we eat. I recently came across an old recipe my grandmother had written down telling how to make lye soap. Sometimes I wonder if we could survive without all the modern conveniences we are accustomed to. I guess the young people of today will someday be telling their children about how things were so tough when they were growing up. Our thought for this week: "Most of the footprints on the sands of time were made with work shoes." This week's news: Mrs. Doris Hildebrand has been in Baptist Hospital in Little Rock for several days. We hope she improves and will be home soon. Doris Barlow and others took her mother, Mrs. Lucille Kirk, out for lunch at the Ole Feed House in Camden on Sunday to celebrate her 91st birthday. She is a resident of Long Meadow Nursing Home. Bill and Kay Sellers spent the weekend camping on Millwood Lake. They enjoy fishing for crappie this time of the year. Funeral services were held February 19 for William H. Pratt with burial at Bluff City Cemetery. Margie Knight enjoyed a visit by her daughters, Rose and Kathy, last weekend. James Nelson has reported that his place has been frequented by a black bear lately. It took a while to identify the intruder until the bear's footprint was found and verified by game wardens. See James for the rest of the story. Britt and Kelly Carman from Camden were visiting in the community last Sunday. Nell Wanda McKelvy brought her grandsons, Chris and Greg Phelps, of Cabot to church last Sunday. I was just thinking that if I had a dollar for every time I spent a dollar, I'd have all my money back. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
