Red Springs EHC

'Living Longer' was the program given by Sybil Harris to the Red Springs Extension Homemakers Club Feb. 10 at the Gurdon Municipal building. Harris is the club's nutrition/health leader.

Heart disease is the number one killer of American women, she said, but women develop heart disease 10 to 15 years later than men.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, she said.

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in Arkansas and the United States. In Arkansas, 136,000 Arkansans are estimated to have diabetes; only half have been diagnosed.

Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease that affects one in three women over 50 years of age, she told club members.

Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in America.

Menopause is not a disease, but the rapid bone loss and coronary artery disease associated with declining estrogen are.

Some things the woman can do to increase her life expectancy are to find a good sympathetic doctor, think positive about her outlook on life, quit smoking, lose weight sensibly and exercise.

She urged everyone to focus on healthy eating habits, cutting back on salt, sugar and fat are also included. Increase the amounts of high Omega-3 from fish, fiber, soy-based foods, foods rich in minerals, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and garlic. Along with this include supplements of the B vitamins and folic acid.

President Tootsie Dempsey resided over the business session. Georgia Schee gave the devotional. Answering roll call were 21 members, who answered with how long they expected to live and why.

Joyce Lantz, a new member of the club, gave a reading of Aging of Women.

A county-wide flea market will be May 6 at the fairgrounds, with $15 and $10 booths available.

Clark County will be updating the cemetery census in the county this year and the Red Springs Club will take census on four cemeteries in this part of the county.

Reports were given on blankets donated to the primary and middle school. Club members made 43 neck pillows, then gave them to the DeGray Kidney Dialysis Center.

Lorece Friemon won the door prize. After lunch an angel flower pot workshop was conducted by Betty Cook, cultural arts leader.
