Prescott's Curley Wolves split their final two games of the season.

The Wolves hammered De Queen 82-56, but were clipped by a scrappy Mena squad 51-44.

The Wolves ended the regular season with an 11-11 overall record and a 6-8 conference mark, finishing tied for fifth in the 7AAA with Fouke. However, because the Panthers took both games from Prescott during the season, Fouke earned the fifth seed in the district tourney.

DE QUEEN 56

The Wolves showed no mercy from the opening tip to the final buzzer as they whipped the Leopards up and down the court, posting an 82-56 victory.

Prescott was on its game better than the team had been all year. The first quarter was indicative of how the rest of the game would go for the visitors.

The Wolves pounded away for a 22-10 lead at the end of one, and were up 36-21 at halftime, as the Leopards attempted to battle back somewhat.

The fight, though, was short-lived as the Wolves came out smoking in the third frame, pouring in 22 points, while giving up 13 in taking a 58-34 lead.

The final eight minutes were a free-for-all for both teams with scoring done almost at will.

For a change, the Wolves shot well from the free throw line, connecting on 22 of 36 attempts. The Leopards hit 13 of 24 from the stripe.

Andrew Fellows turned his game up a notch as he led all scorers with 22 points. The trio of Matt Brannan, Brian Woodley and Terry Woodley all chipped in 13 each.

Jimmy Young led the Leopards with 11.

MENA 51

Mena's Bearcats may well be the team to beat in the 7AAA District Tournament currently underway.

The Cats paid a visit to Prescott Friday, Feb. 11, and went home with a 51-44 win over the Wolves in a tough fight.

Mena opened the contest with a 16-7 lead over Prescott in the first frame, but saw the Wolves fight back to cut the gap to 24-19 by halftime.

The Cats knew the Wolves were for real in the third as Prescott outscored Mena 11-8 to cut the lead to 32-30 as the game headed into the final eight minutes.

The Wolves gave it all they had, but in the end the Cats had just enough to preserve the win.

Brian Woodley was a dominant force for the Wolves as he poured in 27 points to lead all scorers. Terry Woodley followed with 10.

Josh Cavner led the Cats with 20, while Neil Cook scored 14.

Prescott hit six of 12 free throws, while Mena netted 12 of 18.

The Wolves have to win two games in the district tournament in order to advance to the regional battle next week in Fordyce.

Once at Fordyce, Prescott will need to win at least one game in order to make a trip to the state playoffs.

From there, it's three wins and a journey to Pine Bluff for the state title.

Wolf Coach Larry Newsom said the team is playing well now, and if it continues to, there's a chance Prescott could make it to the state finals.

A lot, he said, will depend on how things go in the regional tourney and what kind of draw the Wolves get in the state tilt, if they make it to that level.

The district tourney is being held at Bismarck this week, with the Wolves slated to play at 5:30 p.m. each time they take the court.
