What will Prescott look like in the year 2100, and what will the residents think about their ancestry?

Interesting questions. To help provide at least a partial answer, the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce is putting together a time capsule, to be opened in the year 2100.

Mary Godwin, executive director of the Chamber, said Karen McLelland is the chairman of the Millennium Time Capsule Committee, and is working to figure out what should be placed inside the capsule.

"This is being done to preserve our history at the turn of the century," Godwin said of the project. "It will let future generations know how things were."

Right now, though, ideas are being sought concerning the items to be placed inside the capsule. The capsule, Godwin said, will be a stainless steel box.

Some possible entries for future reference could include menus, price lists, post cards and the like. Only items from the present will be accepted.

Imagine the look on the face of whoever opens this capsule should they find some of today's music. What would they think of our musical interests?

Of course, they could find photos of the Y2K graduating class from Prescott High School, the Curley Wolves or Wolverettes. What goes into the capsule hasn't been selected yet.

Those with suggestions for the capsule, Godwin said, need to contact the Chamber or McLelland by 4 p.m. Feb. 29.

Once this deadline passes, Godwin said, a committee will go through the entries and select the "history" to be sealed for posterity.

The time capsule will be buried in the mini-park on the Sterling's lot sometime in the early summer.

Godwin said those with ideas need to contact the Chamber and get approval before bringing items in.

For more information contact the Chamber at 887-2101, or McLelland at 887-2688.
