Patrons of the 2000 Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be in for a real treat this year.

The featured speaker will be Gary Benson, the only National Basketball Association referee to ever eject Michael Jordan from a game.

This year's banquet is scheduled for Saturday, March 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the McRae Middle School cafeteria.

Once again, one of the highlights of the evening will be the naming of Citizen of the Year. Mary Godwin, executive director of the Chamber, said people need to start getting their recommendations in as soon as possible.

The deadline for recommending someone for Citizen of the Year is March 8.

The recommendations should be in written form and show why the person in question should be so honored. The criteria judges will look at is: family, city; county; state; national; church; fraternal; recreational; industrial; and education oriented activities.

Godwin said the number of letters received about a particular person won't carry as much weight as the quality of letter written.

The letters can either be mailed to the Chamber at P.O. Box 307, Prescott, AR 71857, or dropped off at the Chamber office.

This year's theme is "Hitch Your Wagon To Our Rising Stars." It will utilize a western motif and those coming to the banquet, Godwin said, can dress more casually or in western wear.

Chad Cornelius will once again be the master of ceremonies, and auctioneer for the Chamber Auction.

The auction, Godwin said, is being held for the third time and has proven to be one of the Chamber's biggest fund-raises. The money from the auction is used to fund other Chamber-related events throughout the year.

Also at the banquet, she said, the Educators of the Year from the Prescott, Nevada and Emmet school districts will be recognized, as will the Treasure of Gold. Last year's treasure was Rachel Westmoreland.

In addition, the Nevada County Farm Family of the Year will be honored, as will the Chamber volunteers and the past president.

Tickets for this year's banquet are $15 each. Godwin suggests getting the tickets early as seating at the cafeteria is limited.
