Wolverettes Win Four Big Games; Now 11-1 In 7AAABY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 9, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Last week was a good one for the Wolverettes as they whipped four league foes. Playing four games in a week is unusual in high school, but because of football playoffs and the recent snowstorm, it couldn't be helped. The game against Bismarck had to be rescheduled originally because the Curley Wolves were in the state football playoffs, while the Fountain Lake game was delayed because of the snow. It didn't matter to the Wolverettes, though, as they demolished one and all alike. PRESCOTT 61 BISMARCK 49 Bismarck was their first victim, with Prescott's senior girls posting a 61-49 win. The Lady Lions opened the contest with an 18-16 lead at the end of one. This didn't set well with the Wolverettes as they rallied in the second quarter to take a 33-29 lead at the half. Bismarck continued hanging around in the third period, which ended with the score 47-43 in Prescott's favor, before the Wolverettes turned up the heat in the final eight minutes, allowing only six points by the Lady Lions, while tossing in 14. Andrea Cossey led the way with 27 points, including five three-pointers. Traci Graham followed with 20 points, while Jeania Haynie netted 10, with a pair of treys. Allen led the Lady Lions with 14, while Harden added 11. Prescott was eight of 17 at the stripe, while Bismarck netted 14 of 20 free throws. PRESCOTT 68 FOUKE 38 Fouke's Lady Panthers should have stayed home instead of making the trip to Prescott where they were hammered 68-38. The Wolverettes showed no mercy from the opening tip as Cossey tipped the ball to a fellow teammate for a quick two. This was followed by a Cossey steal, a dish to Graham and another two. In fact, the Wolverettes were up 6-0 before Fouke knew what had hit them. The Lady Panthers' first shot was an air ball, which was a portend of things to come as their night got no better. Prescott was aggressive defensively, making sure Wolverette hands were somewhere around the ball at all times. With 3:39 showing though, the score was 8-3 Prescott. Then the Wolverettes went on a scoring binge, dropping in 13 more points before the period ended. Cossey found her stroke from beyond the arc, and had her range down pat when firing long to Graham. The first quarter came to a close with the score 21-11. Cossey opened the second frame by nailing a 10-footer, as the Wolverettes stretched their lead to 30-15 with 4:28 on the clock. The Wolverettes pressed at times, causing turnover problems for Fouke, which resulted in easy buckets. When Prescott wasn't pressing Fouke's offense, the Wolverettes put on a passing clinic showing how the ball should travel around the court. Halftime arrived with Prescott in total control with the score 38-21. Cossey opened play in the second half by draining an eight-footer. A trap and trey by Graham put the Wolverettes up 43-21 before Fouke had a chance to get going. When Cossey wasn't busy finding the bottom of the bucket or dishing to another member of the team, she slapped shot after shot away, keeping the Lady Panthers from thinking about getting in the game. At the 3:16 mark it had gotten ugly as Prescott led 51-28 and Fouke had no idea what was going on. For almost two minutes, the Lady Panthers were unable to cross midcourt because of the press, and from the 4:16 point until the buzzer sounded, Fouke only managed three points a field goal and free throw. To make matters worse for the visitors, Cossey busted a three at the buzzer to make it 56- 31. As the final period began, the Lady Panthers were dumbfounded as to finding anything that would work against Prescott's offense and defense. With 5:37 left in the game, Coach Bill Cossey began going to the bench. The Wolverettes led 63-36 at the time and were in little danger of losing the game. The subs didn't help Fouke's problems any either, as they entered the game fresh and aggressive. While they didn't score much, they also kept the Lady Panthers from finding the bucket as well. One thing the Lady Panthers did learn was to stay out of Graham's way. During the contest, Graham took out a fan on the sidelines and two members of the Fouke team as she hustled after the pumpkin. Prescott hit seven of 12 free throws, while Fouke netted one of three. Cossey was blistering from the floor as she scored 28 points to lead all scorers. This included four threes. Graham was next with 27. Tera Dunree led Fouke with 13. PRESCOTT 59 FOUNTAIN LAKE 53 The Wolverettes had their hands full when they visited the Lady Cobras Thursday, Feb. 3, but managed to come home with a 59-53 win. It was also a historic night for Coach Cossey as it was his 500th career victory in the prep ranks. The game opened with Prescott jumping out to an 18-10 lead at the end of one, and pushing it to a 34-18 advantage by intermission. Prescott continued the onslaught in the third quarter, showing no let-up with a 48-35 lead. It was time for the subs in the final eight minutes, which allowed the Lady Cobras to make it look closer than the game really was. Prescott nailed six of nine free throws, while the Lady Cobras were a woeful three for nine. Cossey nailed six treys to lead Prescott with 24 points. Graham was again hot on her heels as she tossed the rock in the hole for 23. Becca Thompson led Fountain Lake with 17. Amanda Bean and Jessica Edmonds each scored 12. PRESCOTT 64 NASHVILLE 39 Win 501 for Coach Cossey came a scant 24 hours after win 500 as the Wolverettes demolished the Scrapperettes 64-39 Friday, Feb. 4. Nashville's senior girls were never in the game as the Wolverettes jumped all over them in the first quarter with an 18-4 lead. Prescott's vast superiority was more than obvious in the second period as the Wolverettes had their way with a 42-15 lead at the half. The second half was pretty much more of the same for Prescott as the Wolverettes raced to a 60-21 advantage by the end of three. Period four saw the bench cleared again as the Scrapperettes could do absolutely nothing against Prescott. The Wolverettes went six of 13 from the charity stripe, while Nashville managed to hit seven of 16. In this game it was Graham's turn to lead all scorers as she ripped the cords for 23, including a pair of threes. Cossey added 15, with two treys, while Haynie stroked the nylons for 10. Mandy Binkley was Nashville's high scorer with seven points. This series of wins put the Wolverettes at 23-2 overall and 11-1 in 7AAA action. Prescott will end its regular season Friday with Senior Night and a date with Mena's Lady Bearcats. A win against Mena will guarantee the Wolverettes their fifth straight conference championship.
