Road trips to Fordyce and Mena were not what the doctor ordered for Prescott's Curley Wolf basketball team.

The Wolves took it on the chin twice last week, falling to both the Redbugs and Bearcats in league action.

FORDYCE 81

There are times the best thing to do is simply stay home. Prescott didn't Tuesday, Jan. 18, and were handed an 81-46 loss at the hands of Fordyce.

The inability to find the bottom of the net was a lot of the problem, according to Wolf Coach Larry Newsom. Prescott had the shots, but couldn't convert.

This was evident early on as the Bugs were up 20-9 at the end of one.

It only got worse for the Wolves as Fordyce pushed the score to 39-17 by halftime.

Prescott's offense did better in the third quarter, scoring 13 points to make their total 30. However, the Bugs continued pounding away at the Wolves to make it 59-30 at the end of the period.

Fordyce was downright nasty in the final eight minutes of the game and ran up the score unnecessarily.

Brian Woodley was the only member of the team in double figures, and he scored 19.

Chavis led Fordyce with 13. Walker and Brazil scored 12 each, while Jones and Rogers added 11 apiece.

Prescott was six of 14 at the line, while the Bugs were nine of 13.

MENA 66

Though the final score was closer, the end result was the same as Mena dropped Prescott 66-47, Friday, Jan. 21.

The Wolves did what they could, played hard, battled on the glass, but couldn't put enough points up for a win.

At the end of the first quarter Mena held a 19-10 lead.

Halftime arrived with the score 35-19 in Mena's favor, while the third quarter ended with Prescott down 54-29.

None of the Wolves broke the double digit barrier in the game, though there was balanced scoring up and down the line.

Keon Sockwell led with eight points, while Kevin Fulks and Corey Yarbrough added seven each.

Cavner led all scorers with 18.

Free throws weren't much of a factor in the outcome as neither team went to the line much. Prescott was three of six, while Mena was three of seven.

"Mena's solid and played well," Newsom said of the game.

He added Prescott has mostly home games left on the schedule and it could be a factor in how the Wolves finish the season.

However, he said, the best thing is Fordyce will not be on the schedule any longer. The Bugs will be moved to the 8AAA next season by the Arkansas Activities Association.

The only way the Wolves and Bugs could meet on the hardwood, then, would be in the regional tournament at the end of the season next year.

"We have a lot of games left," Newsom said, "and have the chance to finish in the top four. It'll be tough, because they're all good teams. There are no slouches in this conference."

He said the Wolves are beginning to come together more and playing better as a team. This is important, he added, as they need to make a final run this late in the season.

The Wolves will be on the road to Fountain Lake Friday night, Jan. 28, returning to the friendly confines of Prescott's gym Monday, Jan. 31.

This will be a make-up game against Bismark. The game was postponed until then as the Wolves were still playing football.

From there, the Wolves will host Fouke, Tuesday, Feb. 1.
