An off game at Fordyce proved costly to the Prescott Wolverettes Tuesday, Jan. 18, as they fell 49-46 to the Lady Redbugs.

This was Prescott's first conference loss of the year, and their second overall.

Coach Bill Cossey said his charges didn't play well in this game, and Fordyce is a tough place to win.

The game began with the Lady Bugs taking a 16-10 lead at the end of one.

However, the Wolverettes, powered by Jeania Haynie's 17 points, rallied in the second quarter to go up 27-26 at the break.

The lead remained at one for Prescott when the third frame had come to an end, as both teams swapped baskets. The third ended with the score 35-34.

It became apparent the home team had the advantage in the final eight minutes as the Lady Bugs went to the free throw line to seal the win.

Prescott made four trips to the charity stripe, netting all four. Fordyce had 18 chances and connected on nine.

Andrea Cossey scored 14 in the game, including four three-pointers.

Ashley Brown paced Fordyce with 14, while the tandem of Cacey Smith and Denez Sample added 10 each.

MENA 41

The Wolverettes rallied Friday, Jan. 21, to post an important road win over the Lady Bearcats of Mena.

Again it was a tough game, but Prescott managed to emerge victorious with a 44-41 final score.

This leaves Prescott and Mena tied for the league lead in the 7AAA division, and the rematch to be the final game of the season in Prescott.

The Wolverettes haven't been scoring as many points as in recent years, but they have been putting enough on the board to win consistently.

Defense ruled in the Mena game as Prescott took a 12-9 lead at the end of one.

However, the Lady Cats fought back in the second frame, taking a 22-20 lead to the locker room at the break.

Each team added 10 points to their totals in the third period, which ended with Mena up 32-30.

The Wolverettes, though, aren't in the habit of losing games back-to-back. They tightened their defense and cranked up the offense in the final eight minutes to bring home the win.

Traci Graham paced Prescott with 16 points, while Haynie was right on her heels with 14.

Kahl led Mena with 16.

The Wolverettes were near perfect at the line once again, this time finding the bottom of the net five of six times. Mena saw more time at the line, making nine of 13 free throws.

"They have a good team," Cossey said. "We had to come from behind. Mena's for real."

However, the Lady Cats still have a road trip to Fordyce left this season.

The Wolverettes will be on the road Friday night as they travel to Fountain Lake for a date with the Lady Cobras.

Monday, Jan. 31, Prescott's senior girls have a make-up game against Bismarck. This game was postponed because Prescott's Curley Wolf football team was still in the playoffs at the time.

They will entertain Fouke's Lady Panthers Tuesday, Feb. 1.
