Local Lions Club BusyPublished Wednesday, January 19, 2000 in the Nevada County PicayuneIt was a busy year for the Prescott Lions Club in 1999. Overall, the club raised more than $11,000 during the year, which was about $1,000 more than it raised in 1998. The best part is these funds were dispersed to various charities and organizations the club works with. Two high school seniors were presented $500 scholarships, while the club donated $100 to the Nevada County Health Fair. Eleven sets of Christmas lights were bought for the Nevada County Courthouse Henry's Lights project. This was done to honor those Lions who have passed on. Prescott High School's Wolf Trail received $50 from the club, while the organization also pair for 14 eye exams and glasses for those in need. The Caddo Area Boy Scout Council was given $250, with a like amount used to sponsor a summer Little League baseball team. The Nevada County Day Care Center was given $100 by the Lions, while the PHS Cheerleaders got $50. The Lions Club paid for six half band scholarships for the PHS band, amounting to $300. The DARE Program was donated $100, while the American Diabetes Association Youth Camp was given $50. A check for $1,000 was presented to the Lions World Services for the Blind, while the Lions Mid-South Sight organization received $500. A first grader received orthopedic shoes from the Lions Club at a cost of $1,000. The club also donated $300 to help a family who lost their home because of a fire. Operation Breadbasket received $1,000 as well. However, these weren't the only charitable works the Lions did during 1999. A pair of residents were referred for free treatment at Lions Mid-South Sight; the club provided Christmas baskets to nursing homes, needy families and an assisted living facility; and provided Christmas toys and clothes to needy families.
