Cemetery Publications AvailablePublished Wednesday, January 19, 2000 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Arkansas Historic Preservation Program now offers two publications that can be used to preserve and publicize the state's many historic cemeteries, State Historic Preservation officer Cathy Slater of the AHPP announced. Grave Concerns: A Preservation Manual for Historic Cemeteries in Arkansas contains information on cemetery maintenance, documenting historic cemeteries, possible funding sources for cemetery preservation and public awareness activities that can be held at historic burial grounds. Tales of the Crypt: A Living Historic Project for the Preservation of Arkansas's Historic Cemeteries provides information on establishing a cemetery program in which costumed actors act out vignettes on the lives of those who are buried in the cemetery. Tales' programs can be held as educational activities or as fund-raising events. "We regularly receive calls from Arkansans concerned about protecting cemeteries, large and small," Slater said. "With Grave Concerns and Tales of the Crypt, we can provide solid information on ways to preserve and learn from the state's many historic burial grounds."
