Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, January 19, 2000 in the Gurdon TimesWe are really feeling the old virus bug around Cabe Middle School. Several students have missed days of school due to the bug. We are hoping that it will be gone soon. Arkansas State Trooper Cpl. Kelloms and his partner Smokey visited with our students as the danger of use and possession of drugs was explained. Smokey is a canine trained to sniff drugs regardless of how they might be disguised. Kelloms made it very clear to the students that he and Smokey will be making visits to CMS while Smokey works, hoping not to find any drugs, but if any are here Smokey will certainly find them. The punishment for drug possession was explained to the students. Several questions were asked of Kelloms and answers seemed to be those that made the students take more interest in the presentation. Students were amazed when Smokey attacked a cardboard box that had been placed on the end of the gym floor. Smokey simply tore the box into several pieces. The contents of the box was a drug that Kelloms had brought for illustration. The drug was wrapped in a secure package, therefore Smokey was not able, or I should say, not allowed, to tear into the package. It was very interesting to see the speed that Smokey discovered the box and how he preceded to attack it. Smokey is a three-year-old German shepherd. The basketball teams are busy with their schedules. Win or lose, we are proud of our teams. Of course, we don't mean to omit the coaches. Way to go, team, of which without the coaches there would not be teams. A potluck was held Friday for Mrs. Franklin. She was very surprised. Good food was enjoyed. It would be very difficult to find better cooks that those of CMS. Mrs. Franklin was observing a birthday. Mr. Alexander has started checking assignment planners to make sure that the students are entering their assignments for each class. They were warned that this would be happening, as it was noted in the daily bulletin. However, several students were taken by surprise when he actually entered into their class rooms to check the planners. Those who did not have the assignments entered were assigned to d-hall. The purpose of this is to have students keep up with their assignments by entering them in their assignment planners. This method also makes it easier for parents to know homework or any assignments their child may have. Hopefully, the next time planners are checked, everyone will have theirs filled out and no d-hall slips will be issued. The assignment planners are required by all students. For some reason, I just can't think of one, several students do not have time to write their assignments. After the written assignment search, they may find the time in the future. We are proud of the honor roll for the first semester. Be sure to check the list. The goal is to try to get all our students on the honor roll, therefore, you can understand why we are always busy making Classy Moments at CMS.
