Gurdon's Lady Devils have had a rough go of it lately on the hardwood.

In fact, the team has dropped three of four recent contests.

The Lady Devils hosted Genoa Central, falling 54-29 to the Lady Dragons.

In three of the four periods played, Gurdon's girls failed to break the double-figure mark.

The game opened with the two teams playing close, but Genoa managed to take a 12-10 lead at the end of one. The Lady Devils connected on four field goals and a pair of free throws.

However, points came hard from there on out. In the second frame, Gurdon hit two from the field, one being a three-pointer, and one free throw.

The Lady Dragons, on the other side, though, went four-for-four at the line and added three field goals to take a 22-16 halftime lead.

This wasn't an insurmountable lead at the time. But, the Lady Devils had another off quarter in the third, managing only four points, while Genoa poured in 14.

By the end of three, the Lady Devils were on the wrong end of a 36-20 score.

Gurdon's scoring improved in the final eight minutes, somewhat, but not enough to overcome the hole the Lady Devils were in.

Vonesha Young was the only member of the team in double figures with 12.

Ashley Hay led all scorers by pouring in 16 for Genoa. Malgan Notingham followed suit with a 12-point effort, while Brandy Humphries stroked the nylons for 11.

Gurdon was four of eight at the line, while Genoa netted 24 of 31 free throws.

Prior to the Genoa game, the Lady Devils lost a tough one, 58-50, to Mt. Olive, La., in the Fouke Tournament.

The Lady Devils were consistent in their scoring attack the first three periods, and exploded in the fourth quarter for 19 points.

The game opened with Mt. Olive taking an 11-10 lead at the end of one, pushing this to a 28-21 lead at halftime. By the end of three, the score was 44-31.

Sonia Beasley led Gurdon with 15 points. Angela Walker was next with 13 and Young netted 11.

Two players carried Mt. Olive offensively. Kristi Weems poured in 23 to lead all scorers, and Terry Sanders ripped the cords for 20.

Gurdon was six of 13 at the line, while Mt. Olive was 21 of 39.

In the first round of the Fouke tourney, the Lady Devils dropped another heartbreaker, 63-53, to De Queen.

The Lady Devils hit four field goals in the first quarter, but trailed 13-8, as the Lady Leopards were on fire from the perimeter.

Gurdon's girls battled back, cutting into De Queen's lead a bit during the second quarter. Beasley nailed a couple of threes as the score at halftime was 27-23.

De Queen unleashed an offensive juggernaut in the third quarter, exploding for 25 points.

The Lady Leopards hit a trio of threes, eight free throws and four deuces.

Gurdon hit more free throws (4) than field goals (3).

At the end of three, the Lady Devils had a mountain to climb with the score 52-33.

Gurdon returned the favor in the final eight minutes, blistering the net for 20 points, while giving up 11.

Young had the hot hand for the Lady Devils as she played string music to the tune of 22 points. Beasley was the only other member of the team in double figures, with 16.

Gurdon was 17 of 30 at the line, while De Queen was 22 of 41.

The Lady Devils had a fight with Mt. Olive, La., in their next game at the Fouke tilt, battling hard before falling 58-50.

At the end of one the Lady Devils trailed 11-10, but found themselves a bit further behind by halftime with the 28-21.

Mount Olive pulled even farther ahead in the third, which ended with the score 44-31.

Beasley paced the Lady Devils with 15 points, while Angela Walker had 13 and Young scored 11.

Kristi Weems led all scorers with 23 for Mt. Olive, and was followed by a 20-point performance at the hands of Terry Sanders.

Gurdon hit six of 13 free throws, while Mt. Olive converted 21 of 39.

The Lady Devils posted a 55-52 win in their first game of the Fouke tourney, dumping Texas High.

However, Gurdon's girls had to dig themselves out of a hole as they opened slowly, trailing 15-5 at the end of one.

By halftime, the Lady Devils had cut into the Lady Tiger lead at 24-19.

Gurdon continued taking the fight to Texas High in the second half, outscoring the Lady Tigers 16-12 in the third, to make it a 36-35 game heading into the fourth period.

The Lady Devils turned up the heat in the final stanza, taking it 20-16 for the win.

Young and Beasley led Gurdon's offensive attack with 16 each.

Brittany Smith paced Texas high with 23, with LaNesha Stanley adding 11.

Gurdon hit 11 of 17 at the line, while the Lady Tigers were 19 of 33.

Gurdon's next three games will be at home, as they host Lewisville Friday night, Jan. 21; entertain Stamps Tuesday, Jan. 28; and bring in Nevada on Jan. 28.
