Nevada Boys Defeat LewisvilleBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 12, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Nevada had a tough time with the Lewisville Red Devils, dropping two of three games recently. However, the Devils have been a force to be reckoned with this season in the 7A Central division. The senior Blue Jays managed a hard-fought 77-73 win against Lewisville. The Jays jumped on the Devils early, taking a 21-13 lead in the first eight minutes, as the Nevada crew showed a balanced offensive attack. Period two saw the Jays extend their lead to 44-29, again with the team playing as a cohesive unit on both sides of the ball. However, the Devils fought back in the second half, cutting Nevada's lead considerably by the end of the third quarter with the score being 59-57. The final eight minutes saw the two squads fighting tooth and nail for the win, with Nevada managing to hold on. The Jays netted eight of nine free throws in the fourth frame to preserve the victory, along with Jason Yarbrough nailing three treys. Keon Page led the way for the victory with 21 points on the night. Yarbrough ripped the cords for 19, with J.J. Lewis adding 11. Donald Austin led all scorers in the game with 23 for Lewisville. Quinton Davis scored 14, with Kris Carr netting 15. Calvin Turner had 10. The Jays were an impressive 16 of 21 at the line, while Lewisville hit 14 of 24 free throws. LADY JAYS 48 LADY DEVILS 63 Nevada's Lady Jays opened well against Lewisville, but had rough second and third periods which led to their downfall, 63-48. Alexis Madison got the game underway by scoring 10 points in the first eight minutes as Nevada jumped out to a 13-7 lead. However, the Lady Devils responded in the second quarter, keeping Nevada's offense from scoring much and took a 30-25 lead at the break. Lewisville enjoyed an 18-8 third quarter as the Nevada offense had cooled considerably. Both teams scored 15 each in the final period, but it wasn't enough for the Lady Jays. Madison led the Lady Jays with 17 points on the night. Pam Young had a baker's dozen at 13. Clarissa Willis was the game's leading scorer with 23. Cassandra Henry stroked the nylons for 18. April Talley had 11. The Lady Jays were off a touch at the charity stripe as they hit nine of 19. Lewisville, though, shot better, connecting on 12 of 18. JUNIOR JAYS 28 JUNIOR DEVILS 40 Nevada's junior boys took it on the chin with a 40-28 loss to Lewisville. The Jays started well, trailing 6-5 at the end of one, but were unable to stop Lewisville's scoring attack in the second period. Halftime arrived with the Jays on the wrong end of a 20-11 score. The Jays managed a 9-6 win in the third frame, to cut the lead to 26-20, only to see the Devils respond in the final six minutes. Rico Mixon led Nevada with 11 points. Darnelle Robinson paced Lewisville with 11 as well. Poor free throw shooting didn't help the Jays' cause as they hit only three of 12. The Devils shot close to 50 percent, netting six of 13. Nevada's job won't get any easier as the Jays will be on the road to Stephens Friday, Jan. 14, and host Genoa Central Tuesday, Jan. 18.
