PHS Girls Beat De Queen, FordyceBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, January 12, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Wolverettes did something last week that hadn't been done in several years beat De Queen at De Queen. Tuesday, Jan. 4, the Wolverettes made the trip to Leopard-land, where they have had little luck on the hardwood. This year, however, the Wolverettes got Y2K off to a good start by whipping the Lady Leopards 59-53. Jeania Haynie led the way for Prescott with a 21-point outing. The Wolverettes opened the contest by outscoring De Queen 17-6 in the first quarter, which was a good sign. In past years, it's been hard for Prescott teams to do much with the Leopard bunch in De Queen. Period two saw Prescott's senior girls in a battle as the Lady Leopards fought back to cut the score to 27-23 by halftime. From there on out it was a war between the two squads. Prescott won the third quarter 16-15 to go up 43-38. The fourth quarter was another 16-15 affair for the final score. The Wolverettes were all but perfect from the free throw line as they netted 10 of 11. The Lady Leopards, though, shot less than 50 percent at six of 14. After Haynie's 21, Andrea Cossey followed in scoring with 16 points, including a trio of treys. Traci Graham swished through 14 points. V. Daniels led all scorers in the game with 24 for De Queen. M. Athers was next with 14. PRESCOTT 62 FORDYCE 37 The Lady Redbugs wished they'd never heard of Prescott after Thursday night's game on Jan. 6. The Lady 'Bugs made the trip to Prescott for a makeup game after it had been postponed when the Curley Wolf football team did so well in the playoffs. Fordyce probably would have rather just forfeited than undergone the 62-37 mauling they received at the hands of the Wolverettes. The Wolverette defense was solid, while the offense was hitting on all eight cylinders. In the first eight minutes Prescott overwhelmed Fordyce 15-6, pushing the score to 28-12 by halftime. Then it got ugly. The Lady 'Bugs, after the first eight minutes, averaged about 12 points per quarter offensively. The Wolverettes, however, exploded in the second half to go up 43-25 by the end of the third period and added 19 more in the final eight minutes. The Wolverettes didn't go to the line much in the contest, taking only six free throws, and didn't do well when they did. Prescott hit two of its six chances. Fordyce saw more time at the line, but was unable to convert the charity shots into points as the Lady 'Bugs were eight of 20. Graham had the hot hand for Prescott as she ripped the cords with the rock for 29 points. Of these points, 18 came from beyond the arc at she was deadly from three point range nailing six in the game. Cossey was close behind with 18 points, with a pair of threes herself. Casey Smith paced Fordyce with eight. Prescott's next home game will be Friday, Jan. 14, when the Wolverettes lock horns with the Lady Pumpkinheads of Nashville.
