Volunteers Sought

Published Wednesday, January 12, 2000 in the Gurdon Times

Hospice is a home care program designed to meet the needs of terminally ill patients and to provide support for their families.

Baptist Hospice is recruiting volunteers to work with families in the areas served from Arkadelphia. Volunteers are assigned to patients and families according to mutual interest, geographical location, needs of the patient and talent of the volunteer. The staff is in regular contact with the family and the volunteer for directions and support.

The volunteer is given responsibility to set his or her schedule with the family and whenever possible.

There are other opportunities for volunteers in hospice, which include speakers for civic and church groups, office work, bereavement services to the family after death of a patient, art work, health fairs, etc.

There will be a two-day training session Saturday, Jan. 15, and Saturday, Jan. 22. The sessions will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day in the Baptist Medical Center Arkadelphia annex (where the ambulances are) in the classroom. Lunch will be provided.

The following topics will be addressed: Concepts of Death and Dying, Communication Skills, Care and Comfort Measures, Diseases and Their Treatment, Psycho-social/Spiritual Dynamics, Managing Personal Stress, Family Roles, and Bereavement.

Persons needing professional contact hours are welcome to attend. Ten hours will be available.

For information call Baptist Home Health/Hospice at 1-800-999-9801 and ask for extension 1041.
