Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, January 5, 2000 in the Nevada County Picayune Most newspapers and other media use the end of a year to pick out the top news stories of the previous year. I checked my records and could not find any earth shattering event that happened around Bluff City during 1999. I guess the extremely dry weather should be mentioned, but that made the news in many places. I guess you could say the year was pretty uneventful around here, which is just the way we like it. Most everyone had their family get-together over the holidays and I'm sure most people ate too much. Some from out of state who were visiting were Doug McBride and his family from Austin, Texas, Milton Barlow and family from Mississippi, Bobby Barlow and family from Tennessee, and Jody Nelson and daughter from Tennessee. I'm sure there were probably others I am not aware of. All visitors really helped attendance at church on Sunday. There were many young children present. The McKelvy family gathered at the old home place on Christmas day. Billy Ray, Robbie, Ashley and Adam McKelvy were there from De Queen. After lunch, several of us stepped back in time and took a ride in Eddy McKelvy's 1930 Plymouth car. I believe this would be a good time to mention those who were buried in our local cemeteries during 1999. Those buried at Bluff City Cemetery: James Nolan Rhodes, Lewis Pruitt, Daniel Starnes, Mary Cleo Pope, Glen Walker, Kenneth Harold Walsh, Sally Genice Golden, Lyndle Walker, Garland Moore and Juanita Turner Spears. Those buried at Ebenezer Cemetery: Annie Mae Green, Thomas Godwin, Harland McKelvy, Broda Barksdale Griffith and Roy E. King. Those buried at Union Grove Cemetery: Ora Lee Purifoy, Nellie Rose Walker and Charlie Gulley. Those buried at St. John's Cemetery: Elizia Mae Purifoy Gulley, Clara Mae Sims and Hollis Ingram. It has been said that when an old person dies, it's like a library burning to the ground. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
