Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, December 29, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune The year 1999 is just about history. It's time to make those new year's resolutions again and to eat the traditional foods to insure good luck through the coming year. There is an old saying that is essential to have pork and under no circumstances should you eat poultry on New Year's Day. The reason is that if you eat poultry, you will scratch backward all year and if you eat pork, you will root ahead all year. However you choose to celebrate, I hope you have a prosperous new year. It has been a year since I started this column. It is not easy as you might think to come up with news each week. Sometimes there is just not much to write about in a small community. If have news you would like to share, be sure to get it to me. James and Kay Nelson had their whole family visiting them at one time last weekend for an early Christmas. They were all in church on Sunday and enjoyed the potluck lunch that was served at noon. Cold and flu season is upon us again. Several have been a little under the weather lately. Jeff Phillips got a deer a few days ago, but not in the way he expected. He was driving on Highway 299 when a deer came out of the woods and hit the side glass of his truck and he and the deer had a 'head to head' encounter. Jeff suffered some bruises about his head, but the deer was killed. You can draw your own conclusions. We are thankful that Jeff was not seriously hurt. The International Paper Co., nursery is busy shipping out pine seedlings now. This is a busy time of year for them. Ron Campbell, manager of the nursery, took time out from his busy schedule to explain the tree growing process to a group of school children from Camden recently. Keep warm on these cold winter nights. Remember, one good turn gets most of the blankets. Happy Y2K. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
