Times' New Website OnlinePublished Wednesday, December 29, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesVisitors to the Internet web pages for Ragsdale Printing Co., Inc. found a new on-line format for Nevada County Picayune and The Gurdon Times beginning December 8, 1999. The new format stores each story in a single record within a database. Web surfers may choose if they want to see a "List of Stories" for a week's edition grouped in categories such as "News" and "Sports", or see "Show All Stories" at one time. In the past, all stories for a week's edition were stored in one large hypertext file which allowed only the showing of all stories at once. The database makes possible a new search engine with improved access. Before the new format, the newspapers were included with all other content on the PCFA.ORG server. Searching could be a tedious process because most common names appear somewhere in each week's paper -- so nearly every on-line edition matched each search. There are now options to "Search the Nevada County Picayune Database" or "Search the The Gurdon Times Database." When matching stories are found, the matching phrase is displayed with a hyperlink to the full story. Viewers will notice stories are formatted more like they appear in the newspaper, with each paragraph indented and no extra spacing between paragraphs. Stories for each week's edition are scheduled to be available at midnight Wednesday morning, although it's possible that stories will be delayed when the office is busy. The Nevada County Picayune and The Gurdon Times are the only two newspapers in the state that make all on-line stories, present and past, available free of charge. Stories date back to September 1, 1995, when the Prescott Community Freenet Association server starting saving the editions in electronic format. Today there are about 10,000 stories on the PCFA.ORG server. PCFA's Internet connection is provided by the community-minded IOCC.COM. You can access the on-line edition of the newspapers at http//www.ragsdale.pcfa.org/ every Wednesday for the latest news from Prescott, Nevada County and all of Gurdon. Newspaper articles have been contributed to the Prescott Community Freenet Association as a "current history" of our area. Articles dated December 1981 through May 2001 were contributed by Ragsdale Printing Company, Inc. Articles June 2001 to ? were contributed by Better Built Group, Inc. Articles ? to October 2008 were contributed by GateHouse Media. Ownership of all Nevada County Picayune content from the beginning of the newspaper, including predecessors, until May 2001 was contributed by the John and Betty Ragsdale family to the Prescott Community Freenet Association.
