Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, December 22, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesYes, we are out of school. We will return to class Jan. 3, 2000 and ready to get back to work. It is always fun to see the new clothes that some will be wearing that they received for Christmas. Notice will also be taken to the various watches, and other jewelry, as well as many other gifts they are sharing. We do agree that Christmas is the best time of the year. Although some of our students had already peeped when they knew that no one was looking just to see what was in those packages hidden in the closets. It will be interesting to learn if they were right or not. That's just part of Christmas and has been for years. Did you ever do that? The talent show was wonderful, although we ran out of time and had to postpone some of the acts until we have the January assembly. Stage fright? No way. Those students performed like old pros. The elementary school provided us with a group that sang without hesitation, followed by a young man, Terrance, who played the drums, and believe me he can really beat the drums. Alan Wimberly will be saving a scholarship for him. It was great having those kids to be part of our fun. Excitement was the top subject this week before getting out for the holidays. Monday we had the privilege of hearing Sandra Hitt's choir perform their Christmas music. I know it has been said before, but she has a way to bring out the talent of those students. We really enjoyed the performance. Stephanie Allison, the music intern, will be greatly missed as the students really enjoyed her. Thursday we enjoyed the singing of Quincy Charles and friends. They held the audience spell bound as they sang. My, what voices! Christa Hopson was taken totally by surprise when she was asked to join the group as they sang Happy Birthday to her. Friday was the day for the talent show. We had singing, dancing, piano playing, various band instruments, pep steppers, choir and even Donald Duck, a.k.a. Josh Lockwood, who sang Jingle Bells. What a time we had. After lunch, a dance was held for the seventh and eighth graders being sponsored by the operation clean up committee. Now don't begin to think that every week is like this, as it certainly is not. We just enjoyed this special time, as we were also making sure that all make-up work was being completed. Thursday evening the faculty and staff of the Gurdon Public Schools enjoyed a delicious dinner together. The cooks at CMS prepared the food that would just melt in your mouth. They did an excellent job. Alan Wimberly played the saxophone as only he can while Leonard Gills accompanied him on piano. They both simply excelled in their talent. Jerry Don Childers led the audience in some Christmas songs. Sandra Hitt and Stephanie Allison sang O Holy Night that was though angels were singing from Heaven. Such beautiful voices. Ann Clingan had several guests to try to throw a ball into a bucket. No one accomplished the feat, but they did receive prizes. The prizes were so funny as Bobby Smithson, alias jack of all trades, Charles Shaver, alias bus driver, Larry White, alias art teacher's spouse, John Thomas, alias The Judge, Leonard Gills, alias principal, Jesse Runyan, alias the forester, Bill Tarpley, alias employee of Sally's, Jeff Alexander, alias we still don't know, and James Guthrie, alias the fibbing preacher, really put on a show for the audience. Mercy, they had talent we sure didn't know about. We were in shock as we listened and watched a performance of reciting poetry, singing Old McDonald, Jingle Bells, The Alphabet Song, making various sounds from a duck to eating a Popsicle, leading the school song, (as though he was Mitch Miller who is Mitch Miller?), walking backwards, sideways, and many other means of total unexpected talent they shared. It was a most enjoyable evening. Thanks, fellows, for being such good sports. Citizens students for the month of December were Daniel Francis, fifth grader, Aaron Charles, sixth grader, Jessica Land, seventh grader, and Nikita Briscoe, eighth grader. We would like to say to each of you that we do appreciate your support and your faithfulness to read our article. May you enjoy the happiest of holidays this year and remember we will be back in the next millennium making those Classy Moments at CMS.
