GHS Girls Post 62-57 Win Over Lady Red Devils

Gurdon's Lady Devils have started the 1999-2000 basketball season against some top competition.

While their overall record may not appear to be great, the experience the team has earned from their opponents can't be measured in wins or losses.

Against the Lady Red Devils of Lewisville, Gurdon posted a 62-57 win.

Gurdon went up 15-12 at the end of one, and led 31-27 at the half.

By the end of three, the Lady Devils had seen their lead cut to three at 39-36, but exploded in the fourth for the win.

Vanesha Young led Gurdon with 18, while Sonia Beasley added 11.

C. Willis led all scorers with 20. C. Henry had 14.

Gurdon was 15 of 28 at the line, while Lewisville was 16 of 34.

From there the Lady Devils traveled to Lovelady, Texas for an invitational tourney.

They played three games against top Texas competition.

In game one Gurdon took it on the chin 60-26 against Cleburne, Texas.

Cleburne opened the game with a 12-6 first quarter, stretching this to a 33-17 halftime lead.

By the end of three Gurdon was down 46-20.

Tiffany Ware and Young led the Lady Devils with nine.

Cleburne's leading scorer was Pam Massey with 11.

Cleburne was 17-25 at the line, while Gurdon hit two of seven.

Next up was Magnolia, Texas, with the Lady Devils faltering 63-42 in this one.

Gurdon managed a 14-11 lead by the end of the first quarter, but went cold as Magnolia heated up. By halftime the score was 34-18.

A slow third period saw the Lady Devils fall further behind at 50-26, before Gurdon rallied in the final period to close the gap somewhat.

Young led Gurdon with 16, while Ware netted 10.

Magnolia was led by Angel with 11.

Gurdon hit four of seven from the line, while Magnolia converted eight of 14.

Next on the list was Grapeland, Texas, with Gurdon fighting hard before going down 49-45.

The Lady Devils held a 9-7 lead after one, but trailed 17-16 at the break.

The third period saw a Gurdon rally with the score 28-25.

Young again was the high scorer in the game with 16. Ware was hot on her heels with 15.

L. Payne paced Grapeland with 12, while C. Calerman added 10.

Gurdon was 10-24 from the free throw line, as their opponent was 20-25.

The Lady Devils returned home, only to drop a close one to Blevins, 56-52.

Gurdon led 16-13 at the end of the first period, and was clinging to a 29-28 advantage at halftime.

Blevins tied the game at 41-41 by the end of the third, and outscored Gurdon 15-11 for the win.

Angela Walker and Young scored 15 each for Gurdon.

T. Martin did likewise for the Lady Hornets, while K. Jordan stroked the nylons for 13 and A. Jordan netted 11.

Gurdon was 12 of 30 from the line, with Blevins hitting 23 of 32.

Next up was a nailbiting, 48-47, win against the Lady Blue Jays of Nevada.

The Lady Jays got off to the lead in the first at 17-12, forcing Gurdon to play catchup. This they did by cutting the gap to 25-24 at the half.

Nevada managed a 12-9 margin in the third to push the lead to 37-33, but didn't have what it took in the final eight minutes as the Lady Devils rallied for the win.

Tonya Russey paved the way for the victory with 17 points. Ware was next up with 13, while Young contributed 10.

Jennifer Harding led Nevada with 12, while Alexis Madison added 11.

Gurdon was 7 of 21 at the line, with Nevada netted 13 of 22.

Dollarway was the next foe for Gurdon, with the Lady Cardinals posting a 59-47 win.

Neither team did much in the opening period, but Dollarway managed a 7-4 lead.

The Lady Cards exploded in the second period to jump to a 31-15 lead by halftime.

The teams scored 18 each in the third, with the difference remaining. The score, though, was 49-33.

Young was the only Lady Devil in double figures, with 12.

Tachika Loe and Bridgette Tate scored 13 each for the Lady Cards, while Tomeicka Matthew added 12.

Gurdon hit 10 of 18 from the stripe, while Dollarway was 18 of 40.

Parker's Chapel was Gurdon's next opponent, with the Lady Devils earning a 53-49 win.

Gurdon jumped out to a 16-11 lead at the end of one, and led 27-21 by halftime.

The Lady Devils extended their lead to double-digits at 38-25 by the end of three, but had to hang on as Parker's Chapel fought back in the final eight minutes.

Young was the leading scorer for Gurdon with 12, while Walker had 11.

Katy O'Pry led all scorers with 14, while Jamie Ball had 13.

Gurdon hit seven of 19 free throws, while Parker's Chapel spent the night at the line, converting 22 of 41 attempts.

The Lady Devils will be in the 6th Annual Fouke Classic the week of Dec. 27-29.

Their first game will be Monday, Dec. 27, at 4 p.m. against Texas High.

On Tuesday, Dec. 28, the Lady Devils will tangle with the Lady Leopards of De Queen at 6:20 p.m..

Their final game of the classic will be at 1:40 p.m. as they take on Liberty-Eylau.
